The middle third refers to the centre of the field as the field is zoned in thirds from sideline to sideline

Red zone refers to the end quarters of the field zoned from goal line to goal line

Yeah its just a phase. Still pretty funny how things like this seem to become a catchphrase amongst commentators, then fade into oblivion.

A little off topic bit its still not as bad as Gary Freeman when he talks about a halfback. "needs to run the ball more! Needs to take on the line more"....thats ALL he says about halfbacks. ><

The middle third is not new. Warren Ryan invented the saying and was using it when coaching more than 30 years ago.
