We had a few like for like guys to slot in. Like May in for Yeo etc. Storm, Roosters etc would back the player in the system. Last night they tried to be different and it showed
Meanwhile, back talking about the game...........This plus one. We would have been much better to put May at lock, Eisenhuth at prop and Salmon or Falls at half. Players are then playing in positions they are used to. May would be very effective at lock.
As for the teams performance a couple of points:
- Kikau continued the poor form he has shown for the last month and really didn't step up and lead the way. 81% effective tackle percentage says it all and he gave away penalties, made handling errors and played like a rookie. I am not sure if he will ever get to that elite level;
- The spine stunk. As discussed above, May was used poorly and yet he made 41 tackles, missing none (1 ineffective). To criticise him for not having a good combination with Burton is harsh in my view. We were clunky in attack and Burton, Kenny and Edwards had very average games. But what did we expect? They have never played together as a unit before;
- The team tackled well and had a higher effective tackle percentage than the Tigers and a better completion rate. The resilient DNA is still there, but it will count for nothing if you can't score. Remember a few seasons ago when we camped in the opposition 20? We were back to that type of limited play. The Tigers did a lot more with the ball in hand which is why they had more line breaks, more tackle breaks and ultimately more points. A clunky spine won't cut it unless your forwards are completely dominating and ours weren't;
- I never understood why people thought we would win this. Five players have not completed an NRL season yet. Two of them were on debut. The halves haven't played together before and 3 of the forwards normally start on the bench. I don't blame the Tigers for thinking we are arrogant when people expected us to win with this team. We are good, but not
that good;
- In spite of the loss, we should be pleased we were competitive, 13 of the players debuted with the Panthers and we didn't roll over and give up.
