He didn't... he made a point that the NRL expects him to help promote the game and speak to the media, but then when he is in the middle of a heated emotional match they throw a mike under his nose and expect him to be diplomatic...

He did reiterate after the match in the post match press conference, but only because he knew the damage was already done and that if he were to back down he would look weak.

if i'm not mistaken, he said exactly the same thing in his press conference - giving him enough time to compose and control himself. his excuse about ch9 shoving a camera and microphone in his face just before the match ended holds no water, especially considering the press conference was the time at which he called for the referee to be dropped.

He didn't give any excuse for his comments - in fact he said the following day (and again on last nights news) he had no regrets with his commnets and would always stick up for his players.

I don't know where he is supposed to have made excuses for the comments.

and i honestly don't think it was a hollow threat. i believe that, if he did get fined for his derogatory comments, he would seriously contemplate not attending press conferences.

No, he knew that if he were to apolgise etc to simpkins after the match that he would have been attacked for being too wishy washy and not being able to stick by his actions... He knew he would be stuffed either way so he decided to stick to his guns! At least that way no one could say he'd buckled under pressure from up top.

Foz makes an interesting point. What if refs were able to speak their mind as well. Simpkins comes off the field and states

"that that was the worst team I have ever reffed, they are not first grade standard and should be dropped from the competition"

If a ref has a bad game they should be held accountable, same way you and me are if we do not perform at work.

If that's the case, then they should be held accountable by their employers, not coaches or players.
