According to this, the average for SL round 13 2008 is 15000 - most likely an appproximation. 3 games were played yesterday - so does that mean the total crowd was 45 000? If so, that would be huge considering last year the 1st day drew 32 384.

on TRL its listed as 30,000, down 2000.

though 2 of the games werent exactly the most popular.

The 32K crowd was on day 2 last year. 26K was the day 1 crowd last year, so it was an increase of 4K. We'll see what happends tonight with Saints/Wigan and the Hull derby. I expect a larger crowd for the second day.

MM certainly helped the Crusaders. They drew over 6,000.

In the right direction, but not a dramatic increase... will be interesting to see if this has any bearing in the franchise decisions, or whether the weekend is again scheduled in 2009.

If you get to see the Hull derby, watch Steve "Hollywood" Ganson step into the limelight once again and kill any hope Hull had of winning the game. Just as he did to Leeds last year.

interesting quote from the article here:

"Cardiff by numbers
63,144: The number of spectators who turned up for the two days of Millennium Magic.
500: Catalans fans who made the trip from Perpignan.
450: Stewards on duty in the Millennium Stadium.
300: Hotel rooms booked for players, coaches and backroom staff of the 12 clubs.
160: Accredited media covering the jamboree.
0: Arrests to further enhance Rugby League's family image."

Very positive for that to be the status quo over in the UK. If only it could be the same here in Australia. Rugby League needs to get back to that 'family image' more here.

I personally couldn't sit through 6 games of league in 2 days, no matter how good they were. It would be good to know how many people left and how many people came in inbetween each game, so as to calculate how many different people saw the event.

Was going to head over, but a stuff up with a car rental company ruined my plans...

Good coverage and even snippets in the London Press.

There is news of bids being placed from Scotland and Ireland for the 2009 event

MM at Cardiff was supposed to be a three year deal. Why they are now talking about it going elsewhere in 2009 (final year of the three) I don't understand. Murrayfield would be an option from a logistical and financial viewpoint but Belfast wouldn't have a hope in hell. Their biggest venue, Windsor Park, only holds twenty thousand.

I went, and thought it was fantastic. Some great matches and loved the carnival atmosphere and colour in the town centre.

Some pretty good nightlife topped it all off. I'd go back again, but probably prefer Edinburgh for 2009 as I am yet to go there.

Did you try the Brains SA in the stadium ali? And were they selling big pizzas from the food stalls like last year?

Cardiff is a great city for an event like this, stadium right next to the train station, brewery on the other side, compact town centre closeby and everyone seems to like a drink!

Though I can see the attraction of taking it elsewhere, I think if Celtic Crusaders make it to superleague they simply have to give it a third go in Cardiff next year...

Do you think they should move the Millenium Magic weekend somewhere else, like Scotland (they've got a nice ground at Murrayfield)?

Maybe after Celtic Crusaders do (or don't) get into Super League.

It's a partnership between the league and Cardiff city council/tourism, and has been shown to have economic benefit to the host city, so no wonder Dublin and Edinburgh are keen. But it has to make sense from a league point of view as well, in terms of promoting the game and for a reason, and with a goal in mind.

Murrayfield has been used for the Challenge Cup final sometimes while Wembley was being rebuilt, so has some form on the board. Dublin has a ground too, but neither seem immediate prospects of establishing a Super League team to me in the foreseeable future.

Cardiff has the benefit of increasing the local profile of the Crusaders when MM is in town, and as said by Ali earned some snippets in London media (hard for rugby league to crack) because Cardiff is quite close to the capital. For those reasons I'd stick with Cardiff for a while yet, if the concept is going to continue, at least until there are set plans to increasingly build the game in Ireland or Scotland.

Some more questions:

1) If Celtic Crusaders get admitted into the ESL, where will they play their home matches at?

2) Also, I mentioned about Murrayfield in Edinburgh being a possible venue for Millenium Magic? They could also take it to Paris as well. That'd be a huge boost for League in France, which once held all the trump cards over Union many years ago. I'm sure it would succeed in Paris, and also further boost the need for a 2nd ESL team in France (preferably Toulouse, and also Paris somewhere down the line). Dublin is also another place. Croke Park and Lansdowne Road in Dublin are two venues which are capable of hosting the event in the future.

I don't know about you guys, like to hear your thoughts on this.

Celtic current play out of Brigend, which is about a 20-30 minute train ride and walk from Cardiff, about 30-40 minute train ride/walk from Swansea (it sits roughly inbetween the two cities).

I'm not aware of their specific plans, but I'd imagine in the short term they would continue this arrangement as the ground is not great but it does the job for their crowd level and game day there seems a fun experience for all (cider!). And they'd risk losing some of their existing foundation supporter base if they shifted to one of the cities too quickly. On top of MM, they'd probably look for an opportunity to play the occasional game somewhere in Cardiff to raise profile, maybe home game v Harlequins closer to Cardiff might make sense, depending on cost of ground and accessibility to the train route?

Croke Park would be great in Dublin, I just don't know how many current fans would fly, and how many potential league fans there would be, and what is to be gained out of raising interest there if there are no longer term plans? You'd lose the benefit of raising interest in Wales or France, as you say.

I'm not sure jumping right into Paris would be the best move, Catalans have got a few headlines in French national papers from their challenge cup run last year, but it might be better off holding MM in Toulouse once they've finished with Cardiff, since there is an intention/bid for a superleague team, and building up momentum and profile in France from there?

If we're talking about 30-40,000 fans max, I think then there are grounds in Toulouse that can do that. Cardiff 2009 (if Celtic Crusaders get in), Toulouse 2010-2012 (if Toulouse miss out, or get in and need a second year boost)?
