I've been a fan for years (I support the, erm, New York Mets) and have always wondered why the season is soooooo long - 162 games.

When compared to the NBA's 82 games season that actuall has MORE playoff series' it seems like a bit of overkill.

Any ideas??

its all about money I think, more games=more crowds=more revenue. Baseball is a low contact sport, so not many injuries occur, and it doesn't really leave you battered the next day, so it is easy to back up again.

true, the only major sport i'm aware of that has double-headers, that is two games in the same day. To me it devalues each game, but then again as marshall said, it is a very low contact sport, most of the the time guys are just sitting around in their respective dug-outs exchanging fashion tips, or in case of the Yankees, various exotic substances.

I thought they still scheduled double headers

I am a Mets fan too. Do you know if the pitching staff has been improved ahead of the new saeson? I have not been able to find much news.

I love the long season. Lots of games to watch, although the times are not too convenient on ESPN in NZ. Always on weekdays while I am at work.

I will answer my own question: Oh yes it cretainly has.

With the addition of Johan Santana from the Minnesota Twins, the Mets have pulled the biggest coup of the off season in snaring the best pitcher in the game right out from under the noses of the Red Sox and the Yankees who both wanted him bad.

Pitching - tick
Power hitting - tick
New catcher to improve calling of pitches - tick
Bullpen - could still use some work but not far off - the only weakness but still a 3/4 tick

The Mets are no ifs no buts no maybees the team to beat in the National League.

Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!

Sorry, I will go take my pills now...
