Monster Eels

In 2001 Parramatta's players were dubbed the `Baby Eels' en route to winning the NRL's minor premiership and a place in the grand final.

In 2004, they have become the `Monster Eels'.

Coach Brian Smith said some of the forwards who lost the grand final to Newcastle in 2001 had bulked up over the off-season while the club had embarked on a deliberate recruitment drive for beefy players to add more grunt to the pack.

"We've added a lot of big people," said Smith about his recruitment strategy in response to changes in the game since the Eels' grand final flop.

"The name of the game changed dramatically during the course of 2002 and last year it became smash-em-up football really."

Smith admitted the Eels were outmuscled in 2003 and he has recruited a group of no-nonsense forwards who, while not stars of the game, will provide the Eels with the aggression they have lacked.

The coach points out that former Manly prop Aaron Cannings weighs 116kg while "one mother of a boy", teenager Justin Tsoulos, tips the scales at 119kg.

Add to that Adam Peek plus recruits Corey Pearson (Wests Tigers), Craig Stapleton (Dragons) and Mal Kaufusi (Roosters), and the Eels have the size to match any pack in the NRL.

"On our extended roster of guys training with us we've got 10 front-rowers," boasted Smith.
"So we ain't going in understaffed this year."

Then there's workhorse ex-Cowboys Shane Muspratt and Chris Muckert while Smith said Michael Vella, Nathan Hindmarsh and captain Nathan Cayless had bulked up in the off-season.

In fact the depth of front-rowers has forced prop Cayless to the second-row.

And let's not forget 100kg plus Wise Kativerata and Eric Grothe Jnr, who will contest the wing spots with first-choice flankers Matt Petersen and Ashley Graham.

Petersen is recovering from a shoulder reconstruction but should be ok for the club's season-opener, against the Bulldogs on March 13, while Graham (broken leg) will be back in another four weeks.

It's great to have the muscle up front but the Eels also require players who can run, pass, kick and set up the play.

Last year injuries decimated the backline, with Brett Hodgson, Luke Burt, Paul Green and Adam Dykes all spending significant time on the sideline.

It meant a player like halfback Michael Witt, then 19, was thrown into first grade before he was ready but he handled the pressure with aplomb.

"He did a pretty good job of it and it certainly was a good experience for him," said Smith.
"Whether he's ready for it this year or not, only time will tell."

In case the Eels are again cursed by injuries, Smith has a back-up plan for the halves.

He recruited five-eighth Chris Thorman from London Broncos in case Dykes broke down and has the option of using John Morris at pivot, with Lee Hopkins taking on a utility/hooker role.

The biggest relief for Smith is that the Eels are entering 2004 relatively injury-free.
"That's a huge difference from last year," he said.

"This time last year we had seven blokes recovering from off-season operations."

Be our luck the rules are changed mid season to suit small forward packs.

It's not luck it was a plan at the end of 2001 to do that and I feel it was something to do with the dominance that we were looking like having on the competition.

I believe it called, "beefing up the engine room".

Takes me back to the days of "the bookends".

How strong is our depth if we have a player like Ashley Graham on the wing?
Being a bit fair to Smith we have had so many injurys in the past 2 years.

We were so lucky in 2001 just losing Pat Richards and we had a good replacement in Scott Donald.

Look at Penrith in the past 4 years before last year...They always had injurys...if we can stay pretty injury free this year...We can go very far.

Alot of people put Smith down because of his high turnover in players...but this year he has got rid of alot of rubbish and injured players *cough* HODGSON AND RICHARDS *cough* and brought in some great young talent...I reckon Langi would go off in the centres with Lyon...Look at all the basement bargin players Smith has signed over the years? Jason Taylor and Adam Peek for Starters those two players never played as well as they did before they came to Parramatta.

That looks to be pretty much how Smith has "designed" his team.

You talk about puting Caylo in the second row, well after last night, he is one of our smallest forwards, and could work fine in the second row.

I think we can put too much emphasis on player positions, after all in today's game, it only represents where thay pack down.

Last night Pearson was packing down in the second row. What a sight.

He has bulked up and is extremely huge. The front row at the time was Kafusi and Moi Moi.

Is that an intimidating pack ?

danger, Will Robinson. A tiny Cronulla side put 5 tries past 'em.....

Parra, at the mo, are a bit like Britney Spears. Looks bloody good, but can they handle the rough stuff when it gets down and dirty???

Yeah a tiny Cronulla side that remained fairly much as programme through the trial whilst changes were being made to the Eels during each quarter of the trial. The trial matches are generally high scoring affairs as there isn't a hell of a lot hinging on the outcome.

I guess it was bloody hot too. I just miss our rock solid defensive line circa 98-01.

One think I haven't seen mentioned yet (doesn't mean it hasn't), was the form of Guru jnr. And Burt at fullback. Both, by the looks of it, are primed for big years.

From what I have heard Guru Jr made some blockbusting runs, Pearson and Stapleton were standouts and Cannings showed some of what we expected to see most of the year! There are a lot of blokes who need to learn new combinations and from all accounts they are vbery close to gelling. I think a few clubs may be very surprised this year....

I would also like to think the defense this year will be rock solid and then some.

From what i understand, 1 was from a charge down. And when you use 30 players, it would become difficult to remember who is either side of you. Add the heat, and i don't think there is too much to read into 5 tries being conceeded.

We also had a few blokes who havent played loads of first grade NRL matches, i.e Thorman, Moi Moi, etc. So given a bit of time to work with them, they will improve also.

I was too Jess.

I think he is massively underated, and has really started to fit in nicely at first grade level.

I actually sit next to his parents in the terrace each week and they are super nice, and so proud of their fella to.

Totally agree.
I was VERY happy as well when i heard he resigned.
He did nothing untill the end of the year but he really came on really strong towards the end.
