Morris or Sutton?

Given how everyone wants to sign up Morris....

Was thinking as great as Morris is going i doubt he is going to be a superstar.
Very very good first grader but no star, his kicking game has been good but hes not a great runner of the football when it comes to making line breaks or seting up tries with crisp passing.

If i posed a controversial question of whether you would want a potential superstar such as a John Sutton or would you take an improving John Morris?

If Morris was 180-215k then i would go Morris - anymore than this and i would much rather a player like Sutton.

John Morris is one of the most professional players in the NRL and the Eels know and appreciate this. He is one of the Club's priority signings.

I would take Morris without a thought, not only has he proved everybody wrong this year, he has also been one of consistently best players since signing!!

Sutton has not proved himself yet, he has talent but so did Firman and where is he now?????

Morris without a thought, he will only get better and plus he and Tim Smith seem to really like each other and it shows on the field!

Sutton seems to play well with a less dominant player in the halfback role at this stage in his career. I don't think he was as dominant as he has been when he had Williams inside him. With Moran giving the ball to the "senior" player its working. Sutton will continue to grow but he has some work to go.

Timmy does to and with a player who has played a lot of first grade outside him in Morris if he does make a mistake he has someone to fall back on.

Morris and Smith have the potential to be a four or five year halves combination like Walters and Langer, Stuart and Daley and maybe even Bert and Scoop.

You don't need a team full of superstars. In fact, that can often be a dangerous combination for your own club. Morris is the perfect foil for TS. He gets my vote.

Morris has been outstanding for us so far at 5/8 .... why the hell would we even contemplate anyone else if we could keep johnny?

About the first post of how Morris isnt a good runner of the ball, I beleive with a good Offseason of learning how to run holes and so on he would be one of the best, I have always seen him as a good runner, but yet to get 100% out of his running game.

Morris also offers something I don't think Tim Smith has mastered yet - thats running to the line and passing - Timmy has an excellent passing game, but he is mostly catch and pass....Morris will take the ball running, go to the line and pass - the combination of Morris and Timmy is proving to be lethal....why would we want to split the most effective halves combo in the NRL?

John Sutton is all class

people talk about Sonny-Bill Williams being so great blah blah blah, but Sutton in my opinion is just as good if not better

he's a future rep player

BUT...im a big fan of Morris and i hope he re-signs

although if i had the choice, I'd pick Sutton

Your right about the combo being a great one, my thoughts are that lets not go too over the top with praise too early (Morris has had 15 rounds - he hasnt proven he can handle it long term over a couple years YET - obviously needs to be given the chance). Hes been bloody excellent but i know that form has be attributed to many factors such as your teammates form.

Could he be like a Brett Finch at the Roosters who looked good next to Freddy but without Freddy is looking ordinary. How good would Morris go without Timmy (Timmy would struggle without Morris too granted - but he would be replaceable unlike Tim in the relationship)

Morris reminds me very much of Mathew Johns next to Andrew Johns. He was an above average footballer made to look great next to a star in Andrew, whilst he was solid and played well during Newcastles glory days i always had doubts about him as the poorer cousin in the Johns boys partnership.

Whilst Morris is able to run to the line and pass i'm not entirely convinced he has the "vision" to dominate a game . Tim Smith on the other hand i feel has this X factor.

In saying all this i hope we resign him as well, i just hope we dont pay "overs" based on a brief purple patch of form. We need to be really careful on contract $$ given we paid overs for Tahu / Riddell in particular (which we had to do to attract good players given our position last year). Our on field sucess has meant people will be willing to stay for less $$ to be in a sucessful club.

Remember Tim has only had 15 games in the relationship as well. Brett Firman was the wunderkind at the Dragons in 2003 and should have been rookie of the year.

All reports I have had is that he will stay with the club a he is happy....

Just keep in mind that if we sign Sutton and he turns into a superstar that we will eventually have major salary cap problems in a few years trying to keep him, Tim Smith and quite a few others who are coming through our ranks.

We are better off sticking with the reliable John Morris who has proven that he can handle first grade since 2003. Morris isn't a match-winner in his own right but he's an execellent foil for Smith and he's done some impressive stuff lately. Anyway, after the last few years we need stability at the club, especially in the halves.

All these If this, if that statements???....Sutton aint proved sh*t yet either.

Why do people feel Morris doesn't have "vision"?....The kick he put in for Ben Smith last night was pin point accurate - if Tim Smith or Andrew Johns or Darren Lockyer had done it people would call them gods. ... and Morris has set up HEAPS of trys for us this season - cut out balls, kicks, short balls - he's showing the full repetoire .... who's to say he won't keep improving?

Well said. You don't need a team full of superstars to win a competition. Just solid and consistent guys that play well together as a team. Morris and Smith have a terrific combination and play to each others strengths. I see no need to try and improve in an area where we obviously don't need improving. Last this happened a bloke called Adam Dykes was brought to the club, and we all know what happened there...

Morris - He has formed a good partership with Tim Smith and has setup a lot of tries also can slot into a any position from hooker to wing if needed.
