Mose Masoe Back in Full Training

Was it a bad signing?

Two different perspectives:

1. You can't predict injuries, and these haven't been kind to Masoe in recent times.

However,

2. considering his playing history of being released by the Chooks and the Panthers (including spells with Newtown and St Helen's), it was clear Masoe was always going to be a huge risk...excuse the pun.

All the people who talked up the Masoe signing believed in fairy tales.
The evidence was over whelming he was never going to make it back to full NRL participation.
People who want to keep trotting stats out from 2 years or more ago have no sense of reality.

I don't think our expectations were that unrealistic. Mose is only 27 and if it wasn't for injuries interrupting his career he could well be hitting his prime about now and may still regain some form. He's a big unit and we know on his day he can be devastating in attack and especially in defence ( from memory he has a pretty good highlights reel ). If he's cheap I'd keep him for another year or two. At the very least he could help our reserves and be a handy back up for 1sts if he comes good. It's hard to judge a player by his form in reserves sometimes, because most tend to play to the same level as those around them, you put that same player in a good team and they can really step up. Vaughan couldn't break into 1sts in Canberra but look at him now. I'm not saying Mose will follow suite but don't write him off yet, he might do a Lafai.

You have two ways to drive home. Route A and Route B.
You choose Route B and have an accident.
Poor decision?
All the signs were pointing to route B and the warning lights were well and truly flashing on the GPS and we chose to ignore it.
We rolled the dice we lost, time to cash in the remaining chips and move on.
The real issue is will we learn from the experience or will we repeat it?

Sorry, I remember Mose as a beast of a player so was excited when Saints signed him. Things may have been different if he didn't get a 12 month injury before playing a game for us.

I watched him in the trial game for the Cutters earlier this year and was disappointed. Can't see him ever coming back.

But at the time he WAS a good signing. Just didn't eventuate. As in the stockmarket, can't pick a winner every time.

Unfortunately, its time to let him go and make space for a young'n.

I had a share in a race horse just like him. Kept paying up but got no return

The calm one , haven't we all ?

I recall not so long ago some ' nag ' by the name of Black Caviar , having a bit of a run-around at a horse stud up Rylstone way ( that's a hog's fart away from Kandos for you blokes that don't go travelling much ) .

Anyway , my mate Horrace told me at the time , that the horse was destined for great things . Well I thought that good old Horace had been having one too many swigs from his brandy flask and told him that it looked useless to me . Well what can I say , we all know how that nag , I mean champion turned out .

Now I know that Mose was no champion and was never going to be , however I believed that his size and bulk was just what our forward pack needed at the time . More so when we had no Packer , Vaughan or Simms on the books. Injury ruled out any chance that the big man had of helping the Dragons out .

As I said , he was never going to be a great player , but at the time he was signed , we sure could had used his massive frame . He wasn't the first nor the last gamble that the Club has made , or for that matter any club .
As I said in an earlier post , good luck to Mose wherever he goes .

When we signed Masoe was it on the basis of his current form or his prior history?
His form at the the time was poor and his prior history was average intermittently good, occasionally great.
Nothing there to indicate he would be a proven NRL success week in week out.
On that basis he was not a good signing he was at best a roll of the dice that might come off now and then.
You have to question the reasoning behind spending cap money on that type of player especially as we had major deficiencies in other areas.

The Dragons 'power game' really needs one more first grade standard prop to succeed over a full season. In my opinion the workload for our forward pack is very taxing week to week.

A fit Mosoe who can a least put in 20min of 'power play' would have been just what our team needed under this new playing style in 2017. I mean with all the work our forwards are doing, who would have thought it would be our two marquee backs who would be out at this critical time.

Possum.
I understand what your saying.
But i think both kerr and Lawrie are ready.
In fact lawrie would be my next cab of the rank.
He could do it so could kerr

Yes and I'm sure both Lawrie and Kerr will get their chance over the SOO period, if not before. If Lawrie and Kerr perform well, losing Packer won't be such a big problem. I think we are sailing very close to the wind with the delay in signing Packer.

I didn't mind the Masoe signing at the time, but I would assume he would of been snatched up for decent coin.

I thinks it's sad to say considering we haven't seen him play a game of first grade, but i don't think there's any way possible we re-sign him after 2017, considering our priority signings would be Dugan, Packer, Lafai, Mann

Dont worry.
Packer will only leave if we dont want him.

I think that's the point. People forget how desperate we were to get some size and mongrel into our pack at the time. We were getting owned by any team with a half decent pack and things got so desperate that we pulled two forwards from obscurity mid season. It was sad and very unfortunate he injured himself at pre-season training. This recruitment game is easy with 20/20 hindsight.

I think that we should let Dugan and Masoe go snd sign up the rest being Lafai, Mann, Milne and Packer. The following players should be let go:-
Dugan 750,00
FaiFai Loa 150,00
Glymin 100,000
Havili 200,000
Marketo 150,000
Masoe 300,000
Matthews 200,000
Total $ 1,850,000
The above money would allow us to re-sign the above quartet and buy a speedy three-quarter. We have
already paid out enough money for Hunt (1,000,000 and Widdop (750,000) and
Dugan's absence through injury (6 games) and State of Origin (3 games) is
unacceptable. This means that he only plays 15 games out of 24 and his payments need to be discounted accordingly as he disrupts the team combinations. Give Nightingale the full-back spot next year and put Mann on the wing.

Yes your right, only I'm confident that a decision has already been made to let all the players you mention go - except for Dugan. My rough estimation is that there is about 1.7m left to spend:
Dugan 850k
Packer 450 - 500k
Lafai 350 - 400k

So goodbye to Milne and Mann if we extend Dugan. We should just sign Packer and Lafai now, before other clubs take them. If that does not shift Dugan, then withdraw the offer and extend Milne and Mann.

Or Sign Hayne and Packer and promote our juniors as they become available.

Unfortunately, I doubt we'll keep Nona. We have Hutch coming back. Then there's Field.
Tyrone has been a great captain for the Cutters. They may keep him.
