"Wide Open Road" - The Triffids

I'll second this, great song.

Also,

Pub With No Beer - Slim Dusty
The Go - Betweens - Cattle and Cane.
My Island Home - The Warumpi Band ( I prefer this original version ).
Paul Kelly - To Her Door (?)
The Church - Under The Milky Way ( Almost With You is a classic as well. )
Nick Cave - The Mercy Seat ( why this song isn't as revered as Jail Break, Flame Trees or Stranded is beyond me, it's a brilliant song. ).

Australia The Worlds Suburb - TISM
Whatareya? - TISM
Working Class Man - by a Scotsman recorded in America in an attempt to ride on the coattails of Bruce Springsteens success. Australia adopted it and loved it.

America didn't hear it over "Born in the USA"

Amazing song but the subject matter isn't Australian at all, and Cave has never really been one for flying the flag, for most of his career he's been based overseas and has has had more recognition overseas than here until recently.

Heard Russell Morris with "The Real Thing" the other day celebrating his 66th birthday.

Gotta love that jangly piano!! Well produced by Molly Meldrum and I still have the original 45 in my collection.

The Whitlams - Blow up the Pokies

It Screams Western Sydney.

Always screams inner-west to me. Even Newtownish. Westie pubs never had this identity crisis. They have always been honest drinking and gambling holes. It was the inner city/inner west crap with pretensions that they were something better than seemed shocked when the pokies took over.

While some of these songs don't necessarily "advertise" Australia, they do evoke a feeling of being a quintessential Australian song for me.

The Whitlams - Melbourne
Australian Crawl - Errol
The Church - Under the Milky Way
Cold Chisel - Flame Trees

Thought alot of that song came from a band member with gambling problem killing themself.

Although there is a point - there have been great music pubs in the inner west that have suffered as pokies took over. It's a shame that pokies came in pub owners got lazy with other aspects of the pubs

Yeah it was written about Andy Lewis. He necked himself after his gambling problem spun out of control. By the time he'd killed himself I think he'd left The Whitlams and was a member of The Gadflys.
