Most underrated film

Which movie do you find the most underrated movie of all time? Im not talking about a guilty pleasure in that you know a movie is garbage but in an entertaining way. Im talking about a movie that you genuinely think is good, despite being panned by most people or critics.

For me, "The Cable Guy" fits that bill. I really think it was panned because audiences were not ready for a different kind of Jim Carrey (a darker version). The movie was extremely funny as well as a tad disturbing. The "Medieval Times" night and charades scene still crack me up to this day. Brilliant film which is still not appreciated.

Geez!! Such a hard question!

Many movies I like are generally well received just like those I hate are in the same boat.

How does one rate a movie? Just like music....a totally subjective concept. Hollywood box office returns mean SFA. Michael Bay makes shit but still reaps in the $$$ due to gullible explosion addicted CGI meatheads.

This needs some serious thought.....from me.....maybe!

I like your nomination Wizardman.

I'll nominate one that is often critically acclaimed, but few people seem to have seen it. Best Australian film by a mile - and it was directed by a Canadian.

Wake In Fright

I just looked it up on IMBD. I am extremely curious about seeing it now. Sadly, I've never heard of it before.

Felon (2008)

Stephen Dorff is a bit of a nobody in Hollywood and is no worse an actor than Michael C. Hall but manages to pull off a damn good movie with Val Kilmer (f**ken badass in this) as his support.

It only opened on 3 screens and made a total of $36,756 of it's $2.9M budget

The 'Burbs.

I think Bound is an underappreciated film too, as well as Lost Highway.

And there's never enough love for The Big Lebowski.

So many to choose from, it is hard to pick one that stands out.
I'll try to make a list and whittle it down from there.

Wake In Fright

I haven't seen it myself, but cheers for the recommendation.
Funnily enough, the film I consider to be the best Australian movie ever made would make it on to my most underrated list - The Proposition.

It did win awards, but I'm hard pressed finding anyone who has actually seen it.
I must say, it isn't for everyone. Most would consider it slow and meandering, but it is a masterpiece in my mind.

Good call on The 'Burbs.

The Big Lebowski is one of those movies that was underrated for a time, but has since built up a massive following. Fight Club is another like that. Probably Dazed and Confused as well.

The Proposition.

Unbreakable - people were expecting The Sixth Sense part 2 for some reason and were ultimately disappointed.

First Blood - More so now than when it first came out. The sequels have ruined this move. When people hear the name Rambo they think of a bloke standing in the middle of a field firing a massive gun and killing everyone he sees. This is a wonderfully sad human drama about a soldier not being able to assimilate back into reality.

Hulk - Most thought the movie was boring. They didn't want an introspective drama about a man dealing with his feelings...they just wanted to see Hulk smash. Ang Lee was going for something different to your average comic book movie and I think he did a decent job.

Better Off Dead - No one remembers this 80's teen movie. I don't know why because it's still funny. It is a bit of a favourite of mine for a very long time though.

Copland - Stallone's best performance in an excellent movie.

Alien 3 - Not sure why all the hate for this one. It's an effective horror in an interesting setting. Could have been better, but nowhere near the trainwreck most people identify it as.

Dark City - It was The Matrix before The Matrix was The Matrix. I guess not putting in Kung Fu, Awesome gunfights and bullet time made it less memorable.

Jackie Brown - The forgotten Tarantino classic. The man has never directed a bad movie in my eyes (yep, that includes Death Proof).

Death Proof - Like I said...never directed a bad movie.

I'm sure I could think of more, but those are the ones in the front of my brain right now.
Will be hard to pick one though.

Yeah I think I can agree with every single one of those. Especially The Proposition, Alien 3 and Death Proof.

Have to watch this one again as I found it a disturbingly interesting movie.

Just finished watching "Wake In Fright" and was amazed at the connections I have with that movie. My father was born in Broken Hill (the Silverton connection) and Norman Erskine (the cook). I knew two of his three daughters during the 70s and 80s. He hardly ever saw them for certain reasons.

Magnificent list.

Unbreakable is a fantastic movie in its own right. If another filmmaker released that, it would have been received more warmly. Expectations were waaay too high. While M Night Shamalayan's efforts after "Signs" were awful, this movie deserves a better place in movie history....very fine story.

"First Blood" I think is definitely more appreciated now than on release. A little bit like Al Pacino's "Scarface". One of my favourite movies of all time....brilliant.

Alien 3 was very solid.....hard to live upto a complete masterpiece like "Aliens" though.

ONLY watch the director's cut, just like Blade Runner the studio treated the audience with contempt by forcing them to put a voice over at the start of the theatrical release which ruins everything.

Some good nominations there, I'm a huge fan of Copland and think Unbreakable is Shyamalan's best work to date. Even better than The 6th sense, which loses a lot of value outside of the big twist.

I'd rate Watchmen as popular but still a tad underrated, for me its at least top 3 superhero movies of all time with only TDK clearly ahead. It completely nailed 95% of its source material, yet gets slated for being 'too faithful' by fans. Never understood that.

I'd nominate Event Horizon as underrated, especially given that so much footage was forced out by test audiences for being too much to handle. On face value it looks like a crappy space horror but its actually nicely set up and well acted with some pretty dark and surprising themes.

The Thing, also underrated.

Comedies that come to mind are The Ref, Death to Smoochy, Oscar.

True Romance. Probably my second favourite thing Tarantino has been involved in after Pulp Fiction, and one of my favourite female performances from Patricia Arquette

I loved Watchmen.
I haven't read the book though, so I don't have an opinion on if it's an effective adaptation.

I'm guessing you mean John Carpenter's The Thing. That was another one of those movies that was incredibly under-appreciated on first release, but has built up a bit of a following now. Still underrated though. It's a classic suspense/horror.

Thought I'd be receiving more grief for my Hulk nomination tbh,
I've barely met anyone who liked that movie.
