Most underrated film

The Best Years of Our Lives - won seven academy awards yet few people seem to have seen it. Controversial in it's day with themes that must have been ahead of it's time. If you ever get the chance watch it.

I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang - another movie about a veteran returning from war. This one is gritty, memorable and again must have been ahead of it's time. You will remember this movie if you see it.

Interesting that we have three nominations that involve returned servicemen from three different wars.

True Romance. Probably my second favourite thing Tarantino has been involved in after Pulp Fiction, and one of my favourite female performances from Patricia Arquette

Great nomination. Let me add another, The Game starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. Great ending.

The thin red line
Great choice. One of the best war movies I've ever seen, despite being less than enamoured with it upon first viewing (albeit when I was about 14). It's certainly a polarising movie, as is The Tree of Life - another Terence Malick movie.

I'll nominate Groundhog Day. Whilst it was very well received by critics, you don't hear it being talked about as a great movie by filmgoers. But IMO it's one of the best movies of the 90s.

Magnolia. I love PT Anderson and this masterpiece has sort of disappeared into the history books. Not many people have seen it but it's absolutely fantastic. Tom Cruise's best performance.

For whatever reason P T Anderson reminded me of Sidney Lumet. Guy who directed 12 Angry Men. This shouldn't be considered underrated, but again if you haven't seen it.....

But he also directed The Hill. This hardly ever seems to be on TV, but it is a great movie with a young Sean Connery. Absolutely fits the underrated category - if not the never heard of.

Years later he directed Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Network and lately Before The Devil Knows Your Dead - definitely one for this list. Great cast, script, story & execution. One of those movies that make you cringe but you keep watching as the disaster unfolds.

I loved The Thin Red Line.
It's not for everyone - it's very introspective...more about the mental horrors of war than the physical.
Absolutely beautiful cinematography. And what a cast!

This.

I thought it was a brilliant film.

As for the topic, another film I find is underrated is "Lost Highway". As per usual for a David Lynch film, it a total mindf**k, but I loved it.

Fracture (2007) with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. Maybe more forgotten than underrated as I have never met anyone else who has seen it.

Wouldn't count as great movies but a couple that I loved from the 80's but most people I speak with haven't heard of

Better off Dead
Weird Al's Vidiot from UHF.

Current one that I had barely heard of but was very good was Predestination. A Sci-Fi Thriller type.

Also the latest Tom Cruise Live Die Repeat deserved a better showing than it got.

Edge of Tomorrow was surprisingly a very good movie. But Looking at google it received pretty solid ratings.

Edge of tomorrow was directed by Doug Liman who directed the greatest movie ever made, Swingers.

Only problem for me is the gaping plot hole regarding
the serial number on the gun, its standard procedure to make sure the serial number matches that of the one registered to the owner.

Donnie darko is largely unheard of by the normal mainstream population.

I don't even think it made an appearance on anyone's top movie countdown on here.

Well for some of us at least it wasn't because we haven't seen it. Definitely has a cult following.

I saw it and enjoyed it, but it was a bit forgettable I guess.
If I watched it again it would be like I had never seen it since I barely remember anything about it.

I mentioned Better Off Dead in a post on the first page.
Love that movie.

And Edge of Tomorrow got good reviews but no one went to see it. It wasn't a box office hit.
Blame the crappy marketing for that.
