Movies that surprised you?

Not so much movies that ended with you sitting there in a state of awe, but more movies you expected to be dud/ mediocre but you ended up really enjoying. My stand-outs are the following:

Star Trek: I've never been a Trekkie or into any of that sci-fi geek stuff, so when I went to this movie with my mates I expected to be bored watching a movie with a whole bunch of references going over my head. But I found the movie very easy to follow, the storyline was engaging and I thought the cast was well-chosen. Including guys like John Cho (American Pie, Harold and Kumar) and Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) was a clever choice, as it gave people who weren't Star Trek fans actors they recognised from mainstream comedies. Spok was also very skilfully played, as a character famous for showing no emotion he was still able to portray to the audience what he was feeling in very subtle forms. Definately a movie I could enjoy again.

Love Actually: Thought I'd be bored by a chick-flick full of cliched scenarios and hollow characters. But I loved some of the characters (particularly Colin who optimistically goes to America with a bag full of condoms, and Billy Mac the ageing rocker). There were some classic lines in it too, like when Billy is on 'Idol' and says to the camera in a serious tone "Now kids, here's a word from your Uncle Billy. Don't buy drugs. (Pause). Become a pop-star and they give you them for FREE!"

Porkies: I only borrowed this one because I'd heard about it being one of the original teen sex-romp movies. I expected it to be daggy and unfunny. But I ended up watching it about 3 times over. I don't want to reveal too much, but some of the visual gags are hilarious. This is coming from someone who doesn't crack up very easily in movies. You also get the distinct impression the cast had a good time and a lot of laughs during filming, it feels like it was a fun movie to be a part of. I recommend it if you haven't seen it and don't mind a bit of nudity :p

Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay: I thought 'White Castle' was ok, but nothing particularly memorable. But 'Guantanamo Bay' was on a different level. I was at a mates' flat one night, fairly high, and not tired enough to sleep so I put the DVD on thinking "What the hell, at least this shouldn't be as bad as 'Meet the Spartans'. For the next hour and a half, I nearly had tears in my eyes, and on several occasions I had to stop the movie and take 2 minutes break to stop PMSL. All I can say is that this movie is so politically incorrect and deliberately offensive that you can't help but laugh with a mix of hysteria and disbelief at what you are watching. Esp. loved the fat racist FBI head honcho who goes on a tyrade about National Security, likening his neice to America, before hurling the photo frame at a wall where it shatters a picture of George .W Bush. Weed definitely makes this movie easier to relate to. ;-)

Music and Lyrics: I only watched this last week. I only really laughed about twice the whole movie but for some reason (which I am still trying to work out) I found this movie quite enjoyable. True, Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore are quite bankable in the 'Pleasant rom-com stars' brigade, but there is something about their characters and the piss-take on 80's pop music that I really appreciated. I'm going to go watch this again and try to figure out a better reason why I feel compelled to watch this again.

i have to say, being a bit of a blouse here but marley and me

chick flick and basically was dragged into it. i actually enjoyed it, the story was told in a very simple way, didn't try to be complicated/clever, and actually developed into a story as opposed to your standard situational movie. i really liked it, i felt like i was a part of the movie and appreciated the fact that whilst the characters were 'simplistic', there were subtle themes/undertones running through the whole movie

Ah yes, Starship Troopers. I couldn't work out whether it was meant to be a serious sci-fi movie or a comedy?

Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Thought it would be some sort of chick flick, turned out to be an absolute classic, both hilarious and slightly nice at points as well. One of my favourite movies from the last couple of years.

My wife and I watched this a few months back for the first time....

As much as it pains me to admit it I don't think I've ever cried so much in my life. I'm talking "your parents just got hit by a bus" levels of blubbering. Honestly, for hours afterwards we just kept laughing at how emotional we got over that movie.

Truly embarrassing stuff.

Anchorman. Just chucked it on randomly at work (I used to work a video store), hadn't heard anything about it, and it turned out to be the funniest movies I'd seen in ages.

Pirates of the Caribbean. Thought it would be pretty sh*t...was quickly laughing at the antics of Johhny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow. Pity the next 2 were so overly convoluted.

Avatar - I was surprised that it was so much worse than I was expecting.

SAW II to six million - the first was good. I was surprised they went past two.

Super Troopers - read it was sh*t. This movie was f**king awesome.

The Notebook.

I don't care what you manly men think of me, I thought this movie would be horrible, but its the exaclt opposite, a standout of its genre and a geuninely moving film.

Also Up, I thought Pixar were not making em like they used to, but this was an absolutely fantastic film, up there with Monsters Inc as their standouts.

Yikes look at all these chick flicks.

The Break Up, i intended to hate it but it was fascinating.

Aniston likes Vaughn but he bludges playing GTA so she dumps him to get him to correct his ways. This doesn't work so she dates others to lure him back, he chucks a topless dance party instead. She explains what she has been doing so he accepts her back at which point she dumps him again.

An insight into the female mindset and it is indeed a scary place.

If you are an animal lover, especially of dogs, then it is impossible not to feel that way. We had to have our old bloke put to sleep on the weekend (14 years old border collie). Have just had the missus on the phone, crying again, as she has just picked up the ashes from the vet.
Bought her a pup for my proposal last year - give you one guess what she called her (even though the dog in the movie was a male).
