A couple I was suprised from was Glaxay quest

Agreed. The scene that always makes me laugh is the one where the black dude is steering the ship out of the dock for the first time and it's slowly turning into the wall...

The Notebook.

I don't care what you manly men think of me, I thought this movie would be horrible, but its the exaclt opposite, a standout of its genre and a geuninely moving film.

Had the exact opposite experience

EVERYONE raves about this film, and I'm a fairly openminded guy re: genres, watching weapies etc. I watched it at home with the missus at the time and so was totally prepared to get all teary with her and then do whatever it is you do with the missus after an emotionally gratifying romance....

The movie left me cold in a way that very few movies have. All I can really remember is that the whole thing was so predictable and lightweight, and I just sat there the whole time waiting for something to happen which never did, and then suddenly in the last two minutes they dropped the "surprise" ending which was basically an insult to the intelligence of anyone with half a brain. Then I looked over at the missus and she was blubbering and I actually felt pissed off at her for being such a sucker, as well as confused at what must make the average human being tick if everyone apparently finds that pap romantic or moving.

Was actually a disturbing experience tbh.

:lol: I understand that reaction too. I mean I can see why people dont like it, but for me it's a standout.

I'll 2nd the Count Of Monte Cristo remake from before, that's a hell of a lot better than I thought it'd be.

Changeling.
Not a great fan of Jolie so didnt expect much of a story.
Should of known better with Eastwood directing.
As he said you wouldnt of believed it unless you knew it was a true story.

The Ugly Truth - Hilarious even if it is a chick flick.
Crank - hadn't heard a single thing about it, went and saw it at the movies and was AMAZED.
V for Vendetta - Same as crank, epic movie which i'd heard nothing about.

Same thing with me, had a few people talking about 'The Notebook' and girls were saying to me "You'll cry if you watch it, you can't not cry when you watch it!" So I watched it and kept waiting for the tear jerker to come.......and then the movie ended. I also agree that the "surprise" ending was about as surprising as watching a chick get a facial at the end of a porn scene- saw it coming from a mile away.

Funny People: Adam Sandler.
I saw this whilst flying to England, and when on a plane, I often tend to watch light, fluffy rubbish, especially if I've watched something more intense. I was expecting less than zero from this film, other than to be vaguely distracted whilst the vallium I had taken kept my temper to a minimum. Amazingly this was not a "comedy" rather it was a drama with some amusing and also some poignent parts. I think my frame of mind and extremely low expectations helped, but given a choice of watching this film and ramming an excrement smeared cactus up my nose, I choose to watch Funny People.

Zombieland

If I was expecting nothing of Funny People, then I was expecting Zombieland to be the worst movie of all time and I was having bets with myself how long I'd last and if the vallium I had taken for the flight would fight off my anger at the utter sh*teness of this movie. How bloody wrong I was. Zombieland was not just a bearable movie, Zombieland was a highly amusing and enjoyable movie and would stand up to being watched whilst "sober".

The reason the film works is because it's not a Zombie movie. It's a romantic comedy that not only happens to contain Zombies but also happens to be amusing (something 99.99999% of American romantic comedies fail so badly at). Sort of like an American version of Shaun of the Dead but actually better.

Given a choice of this of flicking one off at the wrist - I choose the latter, but its a close run thing.

Sideways.

I had heard good things about it, but given that romantic/buddy road trip comedies aren't neccessarily my thing i really wasn't expecting it to be one of the best movies ive ever seen.

The writing and acting was perfection. A truly great movie in a genre that so, so often falls flat on its face these days.
