Mullen The Great Myth

Mullo is in a bad situation. He is trying too hard, all because the only assistance he gets from Dureau is his kicking. I have lost count of how many times he has been given a hospital pass, and it's either because Dureau does not want to get tackled or he has no idea what to do or where to go.
I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
Last game he also had to cope with not having the forward power to give him room to get too much done at all.
The bloke has the ability, he's just not being allowed to show it. When we get a decent halfback, and our strongest pack on the field that should all change, hopefully.

I don't totally disagree with Mullen suffering due to playing without a halfback but ffs he MUST make the little plays count. Tell the big blokes where to run, who to target and work off that. Vary your kicking game when close to the opposition try line. He has a great long kicking game and for the most part uses it well. Run to the line more, double pump, throw a dummy, have a dart, something. And while you're at it get a bit of mongrel in ya - a bit of Ennis without going over the top!

Not the first 20 minutes of the game against Manly. Dureau really came outta his shell then obvoiusly went straight back in it as we started to get hammered. I think Mullen is scared to take on the line if anything.

A thread five years old! Really? I do agree however we need to look at offloading him if things do not improve remarkably. Any other club would. We should take a real hard look at Aiden Sezer or Maloney.

Oh FFS. Bumping a 5-year-old thread. Notice nobody thought to bump it during the period since then when I could probably count the amount of poor games he had in 2.5 seasons on one hand. He was consistently excellent in 2012/2013. Last year he suffered with injury but still had some good games. Poor early start to the year and pitch forks are out against our best player.

Getting rid of Mullen is crazy talk. We need to find him a partner though who is a natural organiser.

My preference too. Mullo playing to much first receiver last night. Brock Lamb won't cop being leap frogged for long so if we are going organiser Jeff Robson is a cheap and very reliable option. Buys us a couple of years to bring Brock through.

Can't wait for this thread to be buried under countless others praising Mullen later in the year.

I actually agree that someone like Robson would be a good option for us. We need someone that's experienced, doesn't need to be flashy as a stop gap while Lamb is coming through. Robson is far from an excellent player but I think he'd complement Mullen well.

6. Mullen
7. Robson

14. Roberts

...looks pretty good I think. I do think Roberts can offer the team a lot but his skills are much more suited to bench utility than a starting half.

I'm amazed you guys were able to hold it all in for those 4 weeks where we were unbeaten...

He's had 2 or 3 really good seasons in his 10 year career. The guy has all the skills needed to be a great player but he just can't put it all together. In saying that though, he's still the best half we have.

Even though he's out of form he's still our best player by a mile. His 2012 & 2013 seasons were great. And after he overcame his injury last year he was excellent.

He's lacking abit of confidence atm but he'll come good as he always does.
We as a fanbase are far too hard on him, he's an excellent player & in the top 3 5/8's in the comp imo.

I'm far more worried about Roberts tbh. His kicking & passing is atrocious. If we had strong halves in NSW Cup he'd of lost his spot a long time ago. He played his best footy last year coming off the bench as a hooker, maybe we should try that again.

I actually think it's the opposite. Most fans I know seem to put him on a pedestal because he's a local boy and a likeable guy. He is definitely talented but he's been in first grade for 10 years now and still isn't a really dominant half like he should be. I like him and hope he finishes his career as a 1 club player but I have strong doubts that we can win a premiership through him.

On Roberts, I'm not ready to drop him after 1 terrible game. He's been solid in attack for the first few rounds but I think he's been really great in defence. That said - if he has more performances like the other night I'd really like to see Jaelen Feeney get a go or even maybe play Randell in the halves and use Roberts as the bench utility.
