Was driving last sunday arv and put the radio on a footy show on triple M.
Havent heard before. Never listen to radio.
Hoops. Kent. Couple of other forgettables.
Its fathers day and they start a discussion on best father/son careers.
They throw up names like Morris. Goodwin. Hopoate. Sattler.
Kent says his best were the Rogers.
He gives the Rat a huge rap about his running and kicking and dual Aussie rep career. But his adulation for Sludge. Immense. Said hes a 'shandy off being an immortal'.
Went on about his toughness and defence and then about his grace and swerve, his speed and the way he moved across the ground and effortlessly sliced through defences. He mentioned the combination with cronin and how apt the nickname The Prince of centres was - and how the nickname Sludge was funny as its in direct contrast to what he did on the field. He mentioned how he then went to 5/8 but finished at lock - a position he also excelled at because he was tough. Didnt miss a tackle and had a terrific pass.
Kent mentioned he was a media favourite as well because he was such a great bloke.
He also kicked goals from anywhere.
Loved listening to it because sludge is one of my all time fav sharks.
Me and a mate trained it from Newie most weekends in the early high school years to watch us and l deadset loved the bloke. Always remember the 2 fans dressed as nuns at most games who would start the chant "Stevie Rogers walks on water."
Then watching matt johns podcast last night they start talking about great combinations and get on to cronin and sludge and kent is off again. Twice in a week waxing lyrical about the beauty of sludges skills.
He then shows a try for australia where the crow feeds sludge about 60 out and he just puts it to bed. Man against kiwi boys in defence.
Grace in motion.
They then move onto my 2nd fav.
Gav Miller.
Some great stories about this blokes toughness and how he debuted at wests at 17 before he learnt his skills in UK. Came back to Oz and was basically the halfback at the sharks. Everything came off him. The great combination they spoke about was obviously him and the self-reporter barry russell who matt johns said was like matt dufty - a true runner of the football. Baz won the Rothmans medal.... (another story for later on)....on yhe back of his supporting Gav. Gav would take it to the line and get smashed but they could not stop the passes. Quality slip aways to guys running off him. Nobody in our team follows the runner anymore. Nobody
Kent said ron massey - who was jack gibsons and wayne bennets go to man - said Gav was the best footballer he had ever seen.
Blocker told a story about how Gav flew back from UK to play in his first test and in the sheds pre-game the coach asked did anyone have amything to say. Gav said he did - that today he was going to put on a playmaking show so basically everyone be ready. Blocker said guys were raising their eyebrows...this is the blokes first test, in a room full of Aussie test stars and hes saying this.
He went out and did it. Set up try after try and put on a masterclass.
Johns often talks about an old novocastrian called Alan Bell. A halfback coach for the knights years ago. Coached the kimmorleys and the johns brothers and would get joey and matt together for 3 hour tape sessions and was big on Gavs short side game. Video after video. Go the short side - go to the line. Draw them in and slip it to a support or show and go.
You watch joey johns and you see this all the time. Won them a GF against Manly.
Great memories. And great to see and hear genuine appreciation about our two best. In my eyes anyway.
