Two Lowest Ranked Losers (Parramatta & Canberra) – Eliminated

Week 2

(1) Melbourne vs. (6) Manly - Olympic Park
(2) Bulldogs vs. (5) Broncos - Telstra Stadium
(3) Knights vs. (4) Dragons - Energy Australia Stadium

(Melbourne, Bulldogs & Dragons Win)

Week 3

(1) Bulldogs vs. (4) Knights - Telstra Stadium

I forgot to add this, but Storm would play a Best of the Rest team, consisting of the best players from outside the top 8 in the same week as the prelim.

sounds good on paper, players could get injured though, so would never happen.

It looks alright...the only dodgy thing is that Melbourne would get 2 weeks off. Thats too long i think

That is by far one of the worst finals systems I have ever seen.

THe Storm have three weeks off before the Grand Final. Can you say "loss of momentum"?

The second placed team have to play every week to make the GF.

And I won't even start about the fact that the team qualifying for the GF early have to risk injuries on a waste of a game.

0/10.

AFL's one sucks...honestly im sick of complaining about this, every year its the same...and youd all complain if we had the AFL system too. There was a far better one suggested this time last year by Warren Ryan i think.

How about this.. with only a top 6.
It's not perfect.. but then neither is what we have now
(Winners are coloured blue, eliminated teams are coloured red)

Week 1

Storm (1) v
Dragons (6)

Dogs (2) v
Eagles (5)

Broncos (3) v
Knights (4)

Winners (Dogs,Broncos,Dragons) may get a week off. Top 2 ranked winners (Dogs,Broncos) get a second chance when they play each other in their next match. 3rd highest ranked winner (Dragons) can lose next match.

Bottom two losers are eliminated (Eagles,Knights). If a top 4 team would be eliminated, we get an extra week of finals, as this team (Knights) and the next highest loser (Storm) play a 2nd chance elimination match in week 2.

Week 2

2nd Chance Elimination Match
Storm v
Knights

Winner (Storm) goes on to play sudden death match against 3rd highest winner in week 1 (Dragons).

Loser (Knights) eliminated.

Week 3

Dogs v
Broncos

Dragons v
Storm

Winner of first match (Broncos) gets next week off and is in grand final.

Loser of first match (Dogs) plays winner of second match (Dragons) because of 2nd chance.

Loser of second match (Storm) is eliminated.

Week 4

Broncos off

Dogs v
Dragons

Winner plays team with week 4 off in grand final
Loser eliminated

Week 5

GRAND FINAL
Broncos v
Dragons

OK so I used a little creative licence for the results in the last few weeks but we can all dream can't we????

I personally think both are stuffed.

The negatives
1) Minor premiers have no advantage over 2nd apart from the perception that 8th(4th) is much easier to beat than 7th(3rd).
2) The week off has to be earned in a final and not in the regular season.
3) Losing after the week off is automatically out.
4) AFL gives homeground advantage to 5th and 6th ahead of 3rd and 4th.
5) AFL gives homeground advantage to 1st and 2nd in the first week AND the second week even when they lose (3rd and 4th also get this home ground advantage).
6) the week off is a disadvantage and can nullify momentum. Ask St George, Parra and Adelaide.

It seems that what people like is sudden death football (simple elimination knockout 16->8->4->2->Premier) but they don't want to see a minor premier get knocked out before the last stage.

For this reason I would propose a final 7.
Team listed first has home advantage for first two weeks. After that neutral venues.

Week 1:
1st - week off
a 2nd v 3rd Both safe. Loser uses second chance.
b 4th v 7th
c 5th v 6th
Lowest ranked loser of b and c eliminated. 4th safe so also has second chance.
Winner of a plays away to 1st, loser plays highest winner of b and c.

Week 2:
d 1st v Wnr a. Advantage of second chance.
e Loser a v Lowest ranked (winner or loser) Sudden death
f 3rd lowest v 2nd lowest Sudden death.

Week 3 all sudden death. Neutral venues.
g Wnr d v team of their choice! (except loser d)
h Loser d v other team.

Week 4 GF.

So let's put my hypothesis into some context using teams of today (with hypothetical outcomes).

Week 1
Storm bye
Bulldogs v Brisbane [Bulldogs win]*
Manly v Dragons [Dragons win]
Newcastle v Parramatta [Newcastle win]* Parramatta eliminated.

Week 2
Storm v Bulldogs [Bulldogs win]*
Broncos v Dragons [Dragons win] Broncos eliminated
Newcastle v Manly [Newcastle win] Manly eliminated

Week 3
Storm v Newcastle [Storm win] Newcastle eliminated
Bulldogs v Dragons [Bulldogs win] Dragons eliminated

GF
Storm v Bulldogs [Both lose :p]

This way:
1st has week off for finishing first after the regular season, not for winning in week one.
1st through 4th have a second chance. 1st still has second chance after the week off too.
1st, 2nd and 4th have home advantage however 3rd has second chance. 4th also has second chance but only for first week.
No dead rubbers.

What do you think?

All are spastic Ideas, If we are to have a top 8 then the AFL format is the way to go.

1 v 4
2 v 3

5 v 8
6 v 7

Losers of the bottom four clashes get eliminated.
Losers of the top four get a second bite.
Winners of the bottom four get a crack.

Would make for more exciting games IMO.

Zat Knight almost pulls off a historical win for Fulham. Goes within inches.
Five minutes to go and its still 0-0.

I can hear the crowd from hear - " FUL ... HAM , FUL ... HAM " . The Tottenham locals are stunned
