I know there’s a few muso’s in here. Is it 90% Cronulla Sharks, 10% rock n roll?
It’s never too late to get back into an old hobby that you used to love.
In my late 20’s and early 30’s, I spent most of my free time at the piano or guitar writing songs, and recording them in my bootleg home studio (a spare room with a computer and cheap audio interface). Nobody ever heard these songs, and it didn’t matter. I loved the whole process of starting with nothing, and ending up with a fully fleshed out recording that I had created from scratch.
Then… kids, man. Three of them. Lovely little things. In the blink of an eye, over 7 years had passed and I had not recorded any new songs.
In the craziness of the last year (COVID-19, building a house, moving to the other side of Sydney, raising 3 small humans, big projects at work), I’ve found myself pining for that creative personal expression that used to come with the luxury of spare time.
So I decided to do something about it. I’ve just finished setting up a new (and improved) bootleg home studio in the new house and decked it out with some decent recording equipment; new keyboard, new mic, new audio interface. I’m also re-teaching myself how to use the recording software Logic Pro X – all with the goal of getting songs out of my head and into the speakers.
I’ve even taken it a step further and registered myself with DistroKid, a service for musicians that helps put music into online stores and streaming platforms like Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music etc. I’m really proud to say that I now have my very first piece of music available to stream.
Here’s a link to my song, ‘Wisdom From Fools’ on Spotify.
It’s a bit of a mid-era Beatles influenced hooky pop song with some elements of the power pop bands that I love like Jellyfish and Weezer. The song itself is probably not everyone’s (or anyone’s) cup of tea, and I accept that. I’m not a trained musician. All good. I have certain limitations as a singer, as a guitarist, as a piano player. I’m cool with that too. The important thing is, I’m expressing my creativity through a medium that I’m bloody passionate about, and having bucket loads of fun in the process.
