My team for Round 1

Messages

Based on a mix of our experienced players and what I saw of the new faces in the Charity Shield, this would be my team for Round 1.

Kyle Stanley
Brett Morris
Beau Scott
Matt Cooper
Jason Nightlingale
Jamie Soward
Ben Hornby
Jeremy Latimore
Mitch Rein
Michael Weyman
Ben Creagh
Matt Prior
Dean Young

Jack de Belin
Trent Merrin
Nathan Fein
David Gower

There might be some competition for Gower's bench spot, but I think the rest looks fairly settled.

NOTES:
- Chase Stanley didn't get enough time on the field to prove himself
- Fein can be hooker and backup Half
- Prior can backup as Centre (hope it's not required)
- Morris can backup at Fullback if required
- Gower looked to have size and good hands
- Dan Hunt unavailable because of injury
- de Belin seems to have a bit of speed and goes all day
- IMHO Rein was the best of our Hookers in the Shield

Thoughts?

Good team for rd 1. I don't expect Scott to be in the centres for too long, but it probably does make sense for rd 1. Would expect King to come into the team at some stage soon too.

It looks close to the mark. I just get the feeling Chase will start which I assume would then push Prior or Young to the bench. Leaving Gower to the cutters.

Agree with that Scarborough Dragon.
I think Scott will be in the centres initially so that eases the backrow log jam.
Personally I would start with De Belin and bring Young on at the 20 odd minute mark.
I think Miller is a better choice at prop than Gower.
But, like Chase, injury stole his chance to impress.
So he'll have to work his way into the side.

I think chase might start at centre, with beau scott ready to cover for him in a pinch if he isn't up to it. Also, i hope King gets Fiens bench spot, Kyle can cover in the halves if there is an injury there, and I think King needs as much match experience as possible early in the season.

I think you have to show confidence in your players and for that reason I would start Chase Stanley in the centres for Rd 1. I don't much care for Mitch Rein (why??? I think he is a solid but average first grader and I think its time we had more than that at hooker). I don't expect Price to use an 80 minute hooker so I guess he comes onto my bench but I would prefer King to play 80 minutes. I just think the time has come to try something different in that position. An attacking hooker to compliment the structured style of play we use.

Kyle Stanley
Morris
Chase Stanley
Cooper
Nighty
Soward
Hornby
Merrin
King
Weyman
Scott
Creagh
Young

Prior
De Belin
Latimore
Miller/Rein

I'm a bit surprised how few people rate Rein.
Yes King is good and he probably has an extra string to his bow.
But Rein played very well last year.
His defence is outstanding.
He improved dramatically as the season went on.
And looks like he has improved even further in the off season.
His option taking in the Charity Shield was excellent.
His bling side sniping was clever.
He was EASILY the best hooker last week.
Give him a go for f**k sake...

I think importantly we are focusing on highest endurance and energy from the players who shouldn't get tired that too soon. My team based on stamina and endurance/skills of the position.

1. Denan Kemp
He showed a lot of action at the back end of the rough game last week. His defence is pretty good, stopping the Rabbits to score to level the game. As well he reminds me of Boyd in terms of running and attack.
2. Brett Morris
Long term international player as usual.
3. Daniel Vidot
His strength and endurance seems going high at the moment. His putting on weights and pecs. Showing signs of very strong centre position player. He can run fast and score tries.
4. Matt Cooper
Similar version of Vidot, but elite athlete and can do plenty attacks and dangerous defence. No one can do better than Cooper.
5. Jason Nightingale
Would be world's best winger at this stage. No one do beat him at this position. All well said.
6. Jamie Soward
No comment
7. Ben Hornby
Captain stays, if we get rid of him. Dragons would be easily wooden spooners
8. Jeremy Latimore
He certainly show signs of very strong and passive attacking at the prop, great start last week.
9. Cam King
I'm sure he appears to be like Cam Smith at some stage at end of the last match. No errors, just perfect player and he definitely can play for 80minutes.
10. Michael Weymen
We do need a darkhorse player at the front. Hes gone on fire with plenty metres gained and excellent angle hard runnings last week.
11. Beau Scott

12. Ben Creagh

14. Trent Merrin

16. Josh Miller
17. Kyle Stanley

I don't think having a good game in the charity shield is grounds for anything really. In the corresponding game last year Bosden was a stand out and we all know how things ended up. Rein probably deserves a bench spot but I like the idea of an 80 minute hooker personally. I think he is a good honest footballer but I think we need a bit of variety in that position this year to compete and King brings that in spades.

you blokes who don't rate Rein are kidding he was the best player on the park in the CS. He was also close to the best for periods against the broncs in the semi. He deserves first crack. Im yet to see enough of King...

Exactly, Rein took his luck and ran with it last year. He played really well. Everything I have seen shows an even better player this year. He is the incumbent. He deserves the spot. My issue is Fien. He was disappointing last year and needs to go. Play King and Rein for the first month. Then we'll see who brings more to the team.

If (and it's a big IF) King can play 80 minutes, I would rather have 4 big forwards on the bench. But, having missed all of last year, I'd be surprised if his match fitness is anywhere near that level at this point.

Nobody giving Vidot a run?

He looked good in the Charity Shield I thought. Chunky bugger now. Has got backrower written all over him, looking forward that is.

Where's he fit in though? You already and 30 backrowers, 31 counting Creagh.
