Footy season finally underway, with West Coast v Collingwood at Subi.

Pies well on top at this stage, (79-31) no surprise given the team they have played - almost at full strength.

Only the first game but already disappointed with the umpiring interpretations. So ridiculously soft.

Tom Swift will be a gun. Absolute bargain @ approx 20 in the draft. For all DTers, get on Heath Shaw this year. Looks to be the Magpies 'quarterback' in defence. Chris Masten from W.C also looks the goods.

Looking forward to the '09 footy season.

West Coast got smashed though for the most part they were playing their younger players.

It was good to see over 22,000 people at Subiaco today as that is a very healthy figure for a Round 1 NAB Cup game.

I did get an email today from the afl telling me about Friday's match with all the proceeds going to the bushfire appeal.

I'm a hawks fan but look I am definately going to watch this match. Western Bulldogs vs Essendon.

Footy Fans Unite

NAB Cup Bushfire Appeal Match
Western Bulldogs v Essendon
This Friday, 8:40pm - Telstra Dome

Our Supporters span the nation and we recognise that many of our members reside in the areas directly affected by the Victorian bushfires. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the communities affected by these tragic events.
No matter which team you barrack for, we are encouraging all football supporters to join as one to support this game and to support those communities who are trying to deal with the loss of friends, family and neighbours.
A message from Andrew Demetriou, AFL Chief Executive

The events of the past few days are a national tragedy and have impacted on all Australians.
Like other members of the community our AFL players, the 16 clubs, supporters and corporate and broadcast partners have wanted to work together to raise funds and to show their support for the communities affected by the fires.
After discussions with the State Government, it was decided that playing a NAB Cup Bushfire Appeal game at Telstra Dome on Friday, February 13, 2009 was the most appropriate response with all proceeds from the game being donated to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund.
Not only is the match in support of those communities affected by the fires, but also as a mark of the AFL industry's respect for the emergency service workers and community volunteers who have risked their lives to fight the fires or to provide support.
We will announce other measures in the days and weeks ahead but this NAB Cup Bushfire Appeal game will enable both the competing clubs and also players from all AFL clubs to offer an avenue for football fans to show their support for local communities hit hardest by the bushfires.
From a more immediate point of view, our players and clubs are urging all of their supporters to give money and blood to assist the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund.
Donations to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund can be made by ringing 1800 811 700 or by visiting the website at redcross.org.au
I also want to thank competition partner NAB, broadcasters Channel Seven, Foxtel, Fox Sports and Austar for their support of this initiative, and the support of Telstra Dome to host the match as well as the NT Government for their support of the game being transferred back to Melbourne.

I'm thinking the winner of the Collingwood vs Richmond QF will go on and take the title.

Well, once again we see that its the business end of the season for the Blues.

Gearing-up for a full-on tilt at the NAB.

Looks like I called that one correctly, Auckmel.

Of course, Ratten has come out and hinted that he's planning to rest key players for the semi-final against Geelong.

I tend to agree, Locky.

It leads to a lot of BS moments where teams get half-arsed 9-pointers from relayed free kicks.

And why should a superb goal that splits the uprights from the boundary line, 40-45 metres out be worth less than a long, speculative bomb from 55m out dead in front that bounces through?

Exactly and don't get me started on the deliberate rushed behinds being 3 points. Some of these rules are the most stupid I have ever heard. Can we not just run a pre season comp with the regular rules..or would that be too sensible?

The SuperGoal is the single most stupid rule and I agree, half of the long goals the players rarely mean. I mean I saw a goal by Angus Monfries on the weekend 35m out right on the sideline and that is a heck of of lot harder than 50 out right in front!

I suppose that at least by confining the testing of new rules to a mickey mouse comp, we get to avoid the disasters that would come from trialling them in the competition proper.

At least this way we only suffer dubious rules in a small amount of games over a few weeks. If you bring in a rule for the real competition it effectively has to stay the whole year (at least).
