The refs hate us, Brown says
By Steve Mascord
August 08, 2006 COACH Nathan Brown has claimed St George-Illawarra is copping a raw deal from referees because of the side's reputation for poor discipline.
In a stinging appraisal of the Dragons' relationship with match officials, Brown said referees were "kidding themselves" over the way they treated other sides in comparison. And he also declared that top whistleblower Steve Clark had "hammered" the red and whites since he was abused by the crowd at Kogarah following a 1998 finals match.
"Ever since they booed him off the field and threw a bucket of pee over him here, we get hammered by Clarkey every time," Brown said.
"Because the discipline thing keeps getting brought up about the Dragons, we're getting judged harsher than other sides.
"Some referees are judging us harsher.
"If (a referee) keeps reading about the Dragons' discipline in the paper every day, his idea is they're going to be harsher on you because at the end of the day he's not going to be criticised for penalising the Dragons 12 or 13 times as opposed to penalising someone else.
"I've seen two players (on Sunday) abuse the referee, and the referee just turned his back.
"Jason Ryles does it and he gets put in the bin. The inconsistency is poor. I've seen a Brisbane player and a Canberra player have a crack ... and nothing's happened.
"(If) he had a red V on, he's gone. That's where the referees are kidding themselves a bit."
After having back rower Danny Wicks sent to the sin-bin in the 28-6 loss to Parramatta, Brown also had some forthright comments about Clark, the referee on Friday night.
"Clarkey is a 'black is black and white is white' man and, to be honest, we get hammered by Clarkey," Brown said.
In 1998, Clark reportedly had "a bucket of spit" dumped on him by irate St George fans after a 20-12 finals loss to the Bulldogs.
Last Friday night, Brown said yesterday, "from (he 20-metre taps and set starts, we got penalised twice, which was fair enough, and Parramatta did exactly the same things and they didn't get penalised.
"I mean, a referee can justify every time he gives a penalty.
"But Jarryd Hayne elbows Justin Poore in the head. We get penalised because in the heat of the moment Clarkey thinks 'the Dragons are ill-disciplined'.
"So 'if I'm going to take a stab in the dark, I'm going the other way'."
Brown's comments about referees are certain to cause alarm from the officials' coach, Robert Finch.
He and referee Paul Simpkins visited the Dragons at training on July 25, and Brown said the exercise was worthwhile.
"We're trying hard and we need to keep working hard at it," said Brown.
"A lot of it is just working with the officials better - working with them, not against them.
"Against Melbourne we were fine. I think we only got penalised two or three times."
