Injuries have potentially opened a spot for Max.
Considering some of the wing selections we have made over the years, he deserves a shot.
That's a silly argument, and it keeps coming up in the media and these forums...'considering we picked a bunch of morons in the past, let's pick the guys who should have been there 5 years ago now, even though they aren't the best option'.
As has been mentioned on other threads, the Souffs vs Manly game was the closest thing to Origin that Merritt's been involved in, and where was he? Was he starting his teams roll on with his dummy half running? Was he coming in field to help out the tired forwards when they were stuck in their 20? These are things that are 100% required in Origin and it's the reason that Morris, Uate, Hayne etc are picked for NSW (and similarly why Yow Yeh, Tate etc are picked for QLD).
Is Merritt a terrible club winger? No. Would he disgrace the blue jersey? Probably not. Are there currently better options for the Origin arena? Yes.

whilst scoring a try is a key facet of our game, just because you end up scoring a lot of tries doesn't automatically make you a brilliant player..
afterall, colin best topped the try scoring lists for 2 years (was it 3?)

Better options?
Over the last 5 series they have had wingers such as Turner, Quinn, McManus, Williams, Monaghan, Gordon and Uate. They have scored a combined total of 6 tries in 15 games.
Says it all.
Didn't Uate get dropped from origin?
Tis better to be selected and be dropped than to never be selected at all.
Merritt is certainly a better winger than Uate. Uate has been on the scene for all of five minutes. Merritt has been playing first grade now for over a decade and is one of the top ten try scorers of all time.
length of time doesn't directly link to greatness... and part of the reason why he's on the top tryscorers list is partly due to the length of time he's been playing..
and let's have a look at this tryscoring feat..
merritt has scored 146 tries in 208 games across 10 seasons..
that's 14.6 tries per season, and a strikerate of 0.7 tries per game.
uate has played for 5 seasons, scored 78 tries in 98 games..
that's the equivalent of 15.6 tries per season, and a strike rate of 0.8 tries per game.
so if he had played as many games as merritt, he would have scored 166 tries and be a long way ahead of him in the top tryscorers list..
add to that the fact he has represented his state & two different countries, we can clearly see that:
uate > merritt
Lets see him actually do that then. Uate is more like a Rhys Wesser, the tries are there while he is dynamic, fast and strong. But age will slow him, he will lose his speed and the tries will dry up.length of time doesn't directly link to greatness... and part of the reason why he's on the top tryscorers list is partly due to the length of time he's been playing..

You are clearly discounting the talent that Uate has around him. For most of Merritt's career, he was surrounded by absolute nuffies.
Put Uate on the end of a backline containing the likes of Joe Williams, Ben Rogers and Buddy Gordon and see how effective he is.
If Merritt had have spent his whole career at the Storm or the Broncos, he would be the top try scorer of all time by now.
You only have to look at the year Merritt topped the try scorers list, but we ran last to see what sort of an effort that was.
The next closest to him in trys scored from that team, that year was something like 8. He'd nearly bagged 30 on his own.
Errors and being out of position/poor reads were his downfall. But there would have been a reason for him to be dropped and the selectors may not want to take a chance on him again.
are you saying merritt is a better winger than uate?
