Nathan Tinkler relinquishes ownership of the Newcastle Knights

Bring it home Knights

That "no good" dude saved my club. I didn't like the way things ended up with him in the end with the bitterness and the no payments etc, but that doesn't change the fact he pumped money into my club for years to keep it alive. Obviously he needed to leave - it turned into a circus - but part of me will always be thankful to Tinkler.

You'd think being a Souths fan you'd have a bit more of an appreciation for people that are willing to take your club over and save it but apparently not...

Well said.

Probably of more interest now is what will the Knights do differently to not get back into the pre Tinkler situation?
How did they run up $11mill debt in the first place?

Well, we're off to a flying start by appointing old boys all over the place in the admin and coaching areas... *facepalm*.

Our new board looks quite promising, though. Hopefully they can reign in all the shit. Even the "true believer" supporters are pretty jack of all the shit with our club. It's become a monotonous joke, and everyone needs to pull their head in and just do their job professionally - from players to staff. We have bucketloads of talent and depth in our backline, there's no reason on the field why we should be a joke. We actually played pretty good footy once everything settled and Boyd pissed off last year.

I would find it a successful year next year if we can just keep our noses clean and play football uninterrupted by an off-field circus. There has been way too much instability for far too long. I think a lot of Knights fans would concur with me. There needs to be some fresh standards set by the playing group regarding behavior, too... it's not 1997 anymore. I feel like we've had a leadership vacuum in the playing group for a long time, which I suspect is why Bennett went so hard after the old boys when he got here. Not that it helped much, but I still feel it was the right idea, and we got a few real gems like Scott out of it too.

I think it's the responsibility of the club to provide a stable environment for the crop of juniors we have coming through at the moment, and a lot will take care of itself from there. It's easily one of our richest crops ever, and we've had some very good ones come through in the past. We definitely will have a chance to steady the ship and build on it over the next couple of years... it's just a matter of how much we want it.

That is the question but I'm confident the NRL isn't going to hand the club over until they're sure it can sustain itself properly. The plan seems to be to get the club up and running and have it able to sustain itself before new owners are considered. They've also just appointed a new board and from what I've heard about them from people who know more about them they're actually incredibly qualified which is a nice change from having it full of ex players who of course couldn't do the job properly. Midley is still an issue but he was never anything more than the public puppet in front of Tinkler's men so I'm willing to see how he goes under a new set up.

That $11mil debt was partly down to years and years of incompetent management and partly down to inevitability. For years the club was running with no owner, no leagues club, nothing but gate takings and sponsorship really. Debt was inevitable when the costs of running a club (especially one that spends a heap on junior development and throwing money into the Newcastle comp) far outweigh what was coming in. I really hope the new board and the NRL have a plan to generate more money this time around...either that or they find us an owner that has more experience running a football club which sadly Tinkler didn't have.
