Agree totally. It’s divisive. It should be played at international games tho. Not SSO.
My suggestion, marching bands, fly overs by anything noisy. Decent rock music. No speeches, pre teen mass dance or politics. All players and coaching staff introduced on the big screen properly with up to date images and no stuff ups.

The original point of the thread wasnt so much whether its liked or not.
No one really cares.

It was that vlandys has made the call not to play it for an indiginous game as Australia arent playing.

Fair enuff...now what does he do for SOO?
His precendent is set for non -Oz games.
Many of the same players who he listened to will be playing in that game.

The point is they will say you didnt play it for this game why play it for that one?

That's where the racist card will be played.

This is a one off Indigenous based game.
Loads of Indigenous people find it offensive.
I see that.
State of Origin is different.

Not sure why it needs to be played before SOO.

Kick start my heart seems to work.

FFS I've posted this a lot of times, written by a whitefella, played by him and blackfellas.
Australia is the biggest Island on earth. I dont care for the continent debate, its our Island Home.
Plus its an unreal song, we'd be the envy of all!!!

Like this one better.

Make a good anthem too.... just changed my vote from the Beer Barrel Polka to this one

Love that one too mate. I mean they could make it Blackfella/Whitefella and just be done with it all!

Great tune
About Elcho island where George came from.
His story
Came down to Papunya chasing Sammy Butchers sister.
Neil Murray wrote the song and George couldn’t work out why he didn’t get song writers credits .. he told Neil the story.
Haha

That's not entirely true mate, that was George's version. I've talked to Neil about this and he has publicly stated how he wrote the song
"
My Island Home came to me on a bus one night in June 1985 [...] I had been living in the deserts of Central Australia for some six years [...] I had spent a week with our singer, George, at his home at Galiwinku in Arnhem Land. We camped on a remote part of the island with his family and had been living like kings on bush tucker and seafood caught by ourselves [...] I had to leave and make trips to Melbourne and Sydney in mid-winter to promote the band [...] I suffered an exceptional longing to be back in a boat on a tropical sea. The words came to me [...] I had no notebook with me. I held on to the tune till I got to Sydney and pulled my guitar out of the luggage to find the chords.[6][7]

This is from wikipedia but i have heard Neil openly talked about this dilemma. George would tell everyone he wrote the song, but he never did, Neil did, all alone, and it's about his time on the island, and how he'd been in the desert so long. It's not Georges story.

Wow
The version I told I swear I saw an interview with Neil who told it it like that.
He even told how he played it to George on his car stereo and George straight away said that’s his story.

the lyrics don’t make sense
George had the wife and family
He also had always lived by the sea . Then the bit about being in a boat with a long turtle spear.

I thought Neil grew up in central Victoria on a property.

Neil did, but he was a teacher with his wife and kid in Alice. In that sense the lyrics make a great deal of sense.

you know what
Just between you and me and everyone on the internet I think Neil changes his stories a bit

In this interview he says he was a truck driver in Papunya.

But
triple j files he says he was a teacher.

I definitely heard him say him say that song was based on George’s story .
Only reason I remember is because it caused a bit of shit.
George didn’t receive song writers royalty’s .
He thought it was his story so he should’ve got credit.

I’d say it was probably a bit of both.

I have read the same thing about Neil travelling back to Melbourne with the song in his head.
He def wrote the song.

That Wikipedia stuff is from this interview .

This is the interview where I got it all from .
From about 11 min mark he talks about my island home.
He says he wrote it for George .
Basically says it was George’s story but says he too had spent 6 years up there.
So maybe a bit of both.
This is a very comprehensive interview.
Long.
The sound is very low though.

Yep. A story from Neil's perspective but written so George could sing it, and feel comfortable. So yes definitely a bit of both. Not so cut and dry.
Good history lesson o f the song. Except I have personally seen the other fella say he wrote it, which I didn't think about at the time. No matter, it probably was the .cause of the demise of the band, especially after Anu had a hit with it.
Perfect anthem, heart and controversy

Yep
I’d happily have it as the anthem.

vegans and greenies would probably complain though.
