National Referee League

After watching the Broncos v Titans match i'm convinced there's not a single ref who knows what theyre doing, or if they do, they choose to ignore whats in front of them for desired results.

NRL = National Referee League.

Has there been a game in recent memory with so many 1 sided decisions and general bias against a team?

I've seen many a game in which there's been some shocking calls and even multiple shocking calls against one side. But I've never, ever seen so many appalling calls go against a single team in a single game as this. And certainly not at a time in the game when technology is supposedly used to prevent such shit.

I reckon if you went back and watched games from the old days that were virtually proven to be fixed they would have looked more fair than this.

What the f**k was that "only 12 points in this Badge" comment? What is that supposed to mean?

That disturbs me and its not the first time I have heard referees commenting on the scores in the NRL. Referee the game as you see it and stop worrying about perceptions or penalty counts.

I'm honestly trying to work this out;

What legitimate reason would there ever be for one referee to say to another 'there's only twelve points in this'.

Its questionable isnt it. Im with you, theres no reason although the press conference will undoubtedly "clarify" this and other calls made during the game

The longer the game went on the more blatant it became but that comment was very suspicious. Think they royally screwed that up by having that conversation on air.

Why would the referee care about the score, or even who is leading? Neither are in any way relevant to their role.

And to make a bizarre comment like that in the context of what we saw and a few moments before another dodgy call just underlines the seriously dodgy behaviour of the officials.

Yeah the context is the key. Without all the other blatant bad calls you might think it was a "Keep an eye on the score/game it's still a close game"... but even then the score doesn't have anything to do with doing your job as a ref?! Just no reason at all to say that. Bizarre.

There's a few origin games when NSW may of got a few calls go there way only for like about 20 years straight.

We need to reduce the influence of the referee's on the outcome of the game by changing the punishment for penalties.
We need to get rid of the kick for touch - its too harsh when added to the restart of the tackle count - and makes the refs too influential on the momentum. For example ruck infringements which are usually 50/50 and very arbitrary calls. The penalty should be to advance 20 or 30 metres play the ball in the middle of the ground but no restart to the tackle count. For infringements that involve endangering someone (e.g. high tackle) the penalty should be harsher - something like a restart to the tackle count, advancing 20 metres, plus the offending team losing the player to the side line for the set.
If we reduce the punishments for minor penalties it will put the onus on coaches to try to come up with more attacking game plans such as going to the backline inside your own territory or even chip kicks from inside your own territory. We could also tweak some rules to give the players more opportunities to influence momentum (tweak the stripping rule etc).
