The problem with the suggested model or any other deviates from the current 2 team one is the strong possibility of 2 Australian teams (or I guess 2 British) meeting in the final. The only way to avoid this for sure would be a draw assuring 1 side from each hemisphere makes the final thereby making the previous matches unnecessary.
As others have suggested, they should just move the game to 2 weeks after the SL GF and alternate the location meaning that the squads for that year will compete and both sides will be in form.
As for the ideas regarding competition structure, I am a big believer that the competition will have to split into divisions as the number of teams approach and surpass 20. The competition draw is unfair as it is (albeit mostly in hindsight) and this will only get worse as team numbers increase and number of games stay stagnant. The use of divisions means that teams are primarily competing against teams in their own division for a finals birth and are mostly playing the exact same schedule as their division foes.
