We spent 4 nights in NOLA in October. We stayed on Royal St (Wyndham Hotel) which is one block away, but parallel to the infamous Bourbon St. Lots of voodoo related tourist stuff, the French Market is a decent place to get a feed and peruse the local offerings. Crowd levels and weather were great. We did a bus tour of the city which was worth it. Others I spoke to about their evening cruise on a Mississippi paddle steamer weren't as glowing in their assessment of that experience. People are friendly enough, just have to be wary of the no-go zones. Great WW2 museum if you're into that stuff. Don't bother eating grits unless you like baby spew. Fried catfish and crab cakes were good. I assume you're going for the mardi gras as you said "next month". Good luck with that because it's going to be crazy town.
