New Shihad

I for one am quite excited about this... "The Beautiful Machine" will be out in April, hopefully followed by a tour!

N.B. the stuff about the new song on their Myspace is a bit dated - it was only up for 24 hours, which ended yesterday.

There’s been a distant thunder, a growing storm, whispers and hearsay, secret comings and goings, and rumour aplenty. But yes all can now be confirmed. SHIHAD are releasing a brand new album in 2008 – Beautiful Machine.

Recorded in Melbourne and mixed in London by Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, Jesus And Mary Chain) the first single ‘One Will Hear The Other’ will be on New Zealand airwaves in early December.

In true the SHIHAD fashion of each album being a reaction to it’s predecessor, Beautiful Machine kicks against the proto Rock styling of Love Is The New Hate and mines similar ground to that explored on the band’s self-titled album (known to many as the Fish album). Lead single, One Will Hear The Other heralds a return to more melodic compositions and suggest that SHIHAD are set to deliver one of their greatest records.

To listen to the debut airing this week of One Will Hear The Other stay tuned to the band’s MySpace page: www.myspace.com/shihad

In other news, SHIHAD are confirmed to deliver their customary set of blistering rock n roll in their now infamous sunset spot at the Auckland Big Day Out.

In advance of their BDO appearance, SHIHAD will play two special warm up shows in small clubs in Wellington and Auckland. Details and advance ticketing information about these shows will also be released via the band’s MySpace site this week.

So make sure you log on: www.myspace.com/shihad

didnt they change their name to that of their first album Pacifier ?, so obviously they have changed back ??

Yeah, they did. 'Pacifier' was short-lived (thank God), and was only for one album - their self titled effort released in 2002. It was only done because they wanted to crack the American market, and because it was just after 9/11 and the name rhymed with 'jihad', it was changed to that name, which was incidentially the title of one of the songs from their 1999 release "The General Electric".

In short, they have released 5 albums - 4 as Shihad, and 1 as Pacifier.

They've been Shihad again for a while (since 2004) I think.

Anyway, a tour has also been announced for February / March next year!

Beachie on the 7th!

I'll be there, has been way too long between Shihad-drinks.

I remember seeing them six times during the last tour, not once was I bored.

New song is a bit bleh - but I'm hanging out for You Again live.

I'll be going to the Canberra gig... seems like a great line-up!

Shihad
Gyroscope
Dead Letter Circus
Tonk
Using Three Words

awesome!

Easily the best lineup of the whole tour, IMO. Well worth the $25.

The Wollongong gig was freaking awesome, as you would usually expect.

The set alternated between old stuff and new stuff. From memory, this was the old stuff that was played (in no particular order):

Comfort Me
Empty Shell
My Mind's Sedate
Pacifier
Home Again
Deb's Night Out
Semi Normal
Wait And See

The new stuff sounds great, and looks like Beautiful Machine will be one of their best yet. The "teaser" that is currently being looped on the Shihad website is called "When You Come Home" - it's a bit of a softer number. But the title track is a real head banger!

That electronic "riff" on the site is catchy as f*ck.

Still waiting on a concrete release date, I may order this from NZ as I did with LITNH.

Went to the gig at the ANU last night... wow!

One Will Hear The Other is a killer live track, much better than I first thought when I saw it on Rage for the first time. I should have known really - when have Shihad ever written a bad song?

My review of all the bands...

Tonk - Opened the night, and I tell you what these guys are f**king brilliant. Their T-Shirt says "Tonk. Ass-kicking rock." and based on this, it's hard to disagree. A local band, but one that I believe should hit the national stage at some point.

Using Three Words - People seemed to like it, but I was unenthused. Seemed to be a bit of a slowdown from the awesomeness of Tonk. Would have been better going first, easing people into the night before Tonk hit them with their assault of awesomeness.

Dead Letter Circus - Believe the hype. These guys are really really good. Played all my favourites like Lines, The Mile and that other one I can't remember the name of right now... Dejected or something... if you've never heard them, you're missing out.

Gyroscope - Second last band, but seemingly the one most of the crowd had come to see. No problems for me, I'm a massive, massive Gyroscope fan. Loving the new songs, can't wait for the album. Snakeskin, 1981 and Driving for the Storm the highlights in a show that never really dipped in quality. A shame they only had 45 minutes to play.

Shihad - Finally, the headliners. Disappointingly, about a quarter of the crowd left before they started, fair enough for some I guess given they didn't get on stage until about 12:15. I don't think I need to preach too much to the converted here. We all know how good they are. Whipped up such a frenzy that the lights went out several times during the set. The new album sounds like it's going to be a ripper.

"One Will Hear The Other" is very "radio", but still a great song. Like some other bands, like Muse, they'll have their one radio friendly song, and just go their own way with the rest.

It's much less radio friendly live IMO....got the whole room jumping at ANU
