New Telstra Deal signed

There is no mention in the official announcement about IPTV rights, only mobile and tablet. Under the last deal Telstra had the right to provide full replays after 24 hours of all games online. Sounds like they no long have that right (yet paid more). The NRL seem to have reserved IPTV rights for themselves for the moment.

Leigh.

Fox Sports, which has rights for the other five NRL matches every week, gained the internet protocol television (IPTV) and tablet rights for the matches it will broadcast when the ARLC signed its five-year, $1.05 billion agreement with Fox and Nine in August. Telstra plans to stream those matches granted to Fox Sports through the telco?s own IPTV system, the T-Box.

So if AFL deal is anything to go, we'll be able to watch the entire season live or on demand for $50? Holy f**king shit. I don't have Foxtel, but I don't know their subscription rates will go with this. They're almost giving the coverage away with that price.

Telstra and ARLC to set up media unit under sponsorship and rights deal

TELSTRA and the Australian Rugby League Commission will set up their own media unit to report on the NRL after the two entities signed a sponsorship and digital rights partnership worth more than $100 million.

Under the five-year deal Telstra has agreed to double the $90 million it is believed to have paid the ARLC in 2007. In return it gains the exclusive broadcast rights to stream live rugby league matches to mobile phones and tablets regardless of their carrier.
This means that customer on Optus and Vodafone mobile networks will be able to access NRL matches on smartphones and tablets but will likely have to pay a subscription fee to Telstra.
Telstra would not disclose the commercial value of the contract but ARLC chairman John Grant said the deal was worth “double” in cash and contra to their previous deal.
“We have agreed with Telstra not to disclose the full value of that contract however we do acknowledge that it is double what we got in the last contract rights period. So it’s a very significant lift to the bottom line and it’s a very significant opportunity to build for the future through a digital platform,”

The deal will see Telstra also acquire naming rights to the Premiership and Sunday Football, operation of the NRL website and related team sites, the official NRL app and the official NRL fantasy games.
In a move reminiscent of the AFL establishing its own online media division, Telstra and the ARLC today announced they too would set up their own media unit and employ journalists to report on NRL matches and the goings on within the sport. The NRL media unit will also stream exclusive post game access and press conferences to mobile and tablet devices.
“We’re going to push a few boundaries I think and I think it’s very exciting,” said Telstra chief executive David Thodey.
Fox Sports, which has rights for the other five NRL matches every week, gained the internet protocol television (IPTV) and tablet rights for the matches it will broadcast when the ARLC signed its five-year, $1.05 billion agreement with Fox and Nine in August. Telstra plans to stream those matches granted to Fox Sports through the telco’s own IPTV system, the T-Box.
“Over twelve years Telstra has been a key partner at every level of the game and we are delighted they have extended their commitment to rugby league,” interim ARLC chief executive Shane Mattiske said.
“This extended partnership will see a significant investment in innovation that will deeply engage more fans than ever before in the excitement of rugby league.”

Again mobile and tablet rights only, not IPTV. The NRL have still not sold the rights to stream full matches to a PC web browser, Xbox, Google TV, Apple TV etc etc

Leigh.

T-Box is IPTV, The Australian article states they will stream the Fox matches as well.

It looks like Nein have won the day out and protected their exclusivity into the local markets, so that's pretty much a guarantee of ZERO live video coverage in this country (other than via illegal streams) of the 2nd Friday night match and a Sunday afternoon match. That's pretty piss poor for 2013 IMO.

The National Rugby League and Telstra have cemented the most successful commercial partnership in Australian sport, extending the naming rights for the Telstra Premiership into a record seventeenth season.
Telstra has renewed its association both as naming rights partner for the Telstra Premiership and, in partnership with the NRL, will form NRL Digital Media, a unit dedicated to providing fans unprecedented online, mobile and tablet access to the latest in Rugby League action, debate and entertainment for the next five years.
As part of a game-wide digital strategy committed to providing fans with the ultimate digital experience with the game:
• For the first time, Rugby League fans will be able to watch Telstra Premiership, State of Origin and Test matches live to-air on mobile phones and tablets via the Official NRL App on iPhone and Android, regardless of their carrier. Matches on Channel 9 will be simulcast and those on Fox Sports will be live;
• A full-time NRL Digital Media production unit working out of Rugby League Central will be created that is dedicated to providing fans with the best digital content in Australian sport, including unprecedented levels of video, player interviews and special behind-the-scenes insights;
• Rugby League’s technology platforms will be rebuilt from the ground up, with the NRL, NRL clubs, NSWRL, QRL and One Community all slated for new digital solutions that will give fans fun and easy interactive access to all the latest content;
• Fans will have access to extensive highlights packages during and after games, access to an alternative camera angle during the broadcast and to exclusive post-game features and press conferences on their mobile and tablet devices;
NRL Interim Chief Executive, Mr Shane Mattiske, said Rugby League’s ongoing partnership with Telstra would deliver fans unprecedented coverage of the game.
“The Telstra Premiership is the longest running competition naming rights sponsorship in Australian sport and to extend that with the most significant naming rights sponsorship investment in the game’s history is a wonderful indication of the strength of Rugby League’s brand,” Mr Mattiske said.

“Telstra’s proud history in supporting Rugby League and its fans at all levels of the game, from the Telstra Premiership through to the game’s grassroots and community programs, is at the heart of its commitment to providing the investment and latest technology for a digital network that is changing the ways fans connect with the game.

“Together we have achieved significant growth in the game’s digital network over the past few years and this new investment will fast-track its future development and provide fans with unrivalled coverage and engagement with the game.

“Importantly it is a partnership that ensures Rugby League has the opportunity to create further revenue during the life of the agreement as we expand the opportunities for members and fans.”

Telstra Chief Executive Officer, Mr David Thodey, said Telstra was unmatched in its ability and commitment to deliver Rugby League to more Australians and that match content would be available to all consumers via the NRL App.
“Australians have embraced smartphones and tablet devices and this partnership provides for us to make the app and its live coverage available to all NRL fans where and when they want it,” Mr Thodey said.
“Whether it is watching live coverage of the Telstra Premiership while they are out and about, catching up on latest news or highlights or competing with friends in fantasy football and tipping, the 2013 season will see Telstra and the NRL deliver an unprecedented experience.”

Mr Thodey said that as well as taking the league to a wider audience, the partnership between Telstra and the NRL would support the continued growth, success and enjoyment of the game.
“At NRL games and events, fans will have the opportunity to interact with the sport and their heroes in new and unique ways. Meanwhile we will continue to develop the sport through local community programs,” he said.

“Telstra’s sponsorship of the NRL will help connect more Australians to the sport, whether they are elite players, local clubs or the next generation of players and fans.”

Perth Dickhead is whinging again

Who woulda thunk it

Do you think its a good deal El D?

AFAIK Telstra paid the AFL $150m for mobile/tablet rights (9 games), plus 1 game on IPTV. The varying reports says Telstra paid the NRL more than $100m (maybe $180m, being double $90m??) for mobile rights (8 games), plus the naming rights.

Assuming the rest of the guff (signage, website operation, highlight packages) are the same, I tend to agree with our mate from the west that Telstra has gotten themselves a good deal.

For the fan though, assuming they offer the same $50 season pass that they do for AFL, then its a win for the consumer. I just hope Telstra have learnt their lessons from the first year of AFL mobile/tablet streaming and improve the stream quality and the reliability.

If its 180m its a great deal.

*Edit* Actually the last deal was 6 years. So it would be 150m for 5 years. Still pretty good imo.

It's bleeding confusing. I have seen $102.5m and $105m as the figure..
The last deal was for 6 years $90m ,meaning $15m pa.(from memory $5m sponsorship and $10m mobile).

That means double(if correct) on $15m pa,or $30m pa =$150m over 5 years for mobile etc & sponsorship.Am I right or squirting in the wind.
Or should I ask Rothfield or Bec Wilson for the "facts"?:sarcasm:

Let's assume those figures are correct
TV deal $1.025bn
plus $150m
total $1.175bn
Next to be added Sky NZ.Last deal $14m pa.Surely the code can pump it up to $15m pa =$75m

Wish they'd give us alternate commentary - none.

Anyway it sounds promising, lets see what actually happens

details so far have been sketchy to say the least. but if this online content is half of what gamepass(nfl online) offers it is a massive win for the NRL fan.

The only issue I can foresee is that Telstra cannot design a decent app (or Website even for that matter) to save their life.

Given that it will be them who create the application for mobile devices, its bound to be shit.

So for the non computer nerd:
Does it mean I can buy an app for a year and watch live games on my iphone and ipad?

How much data would watching a entire game use?
