I have NFLgame pass that cost me $200 for a full 12 months. I also have foxtel for footy and NFL for the last few years. The team i follow in the NFL is very rarely broadcasted on pay tv over here so this season I thought 'what the hell' and gave gamepass a go and let me tell you its the best thing I ever did. I get up early to watch Tampa games on my ipad with my earphones on and i thoroughly enjoy the experience as well as all the NFL network shows and docos. If this type of service was available for the NRL at $50-100, it would be an absolute steal and I would get rid of my foxtel box in a heartbeat.

The NRL will be hiring around 40 people to work in their media unit for next year including journalists, editors and producers.

Any chance rothfield will apply?

So they've confirmed the deal is worth around $150mill (ie dble the $15mill a year of previous deal). What do people think? Good deal or undersold? Compared to last deal looks excellent but compared to AFL's deal ($150mill + $60 mill= $210mill) looks not such a good financial outcome. $12mill a year could pay for a lot of good things.

Going to be interesting to see how this gets delivered. If you have to get a fox and Telstra subscription to see all games not so good, if one subscription gets you access to all games and if streamed in hd then will be a great outcome for those with the techno set ups to take advantage.

The only drawback with Gamepass is the lack of PS3 ability. For the price we pay it should be there, great service otherwise.

Love my gamepass except when i only get audio because of limited bandwidth from the broadcaster.

it depends on what percentage the NRL get from the streaming rights and how well they do the streaming application. I think it's a great deal if the ARLC start preparing the infrastructure so in five years the game is in a position to run the online rights them selves.

Would that even be an option if Gallop was still in charge?
I think not.
Will be very interesting to see the media landscape in 5 yrs.

I highly doubt that gallop would have thought of this. in fact if the NRL didn't change to the ARLC could you imagine Gallop setting up a media team at all?

I know it's hard to compare as Gallop was running the code off an oily rag but would he have seen the possibilities that online rights will eventually become?

You're right, there is no way that Gallop would have thought to copy to AFL a year or so after they set up their own media unit, just like the ARLC have done. I think it's time to stop laying the boot into Gallop FFS. The bloke did his job and now is gone. Might not have been the most innovative I'll grant you that, but he did a decent job in my book given the state of the game when he took over. The fact that FA snapped him up says he was a better administrator than he was given credit for. That, or the LU keyboard warriors are a better judge than that no-name Frank Lowy.

and I guess the ARLC copied the AFL in getting a percentage of the app streaming money too? wait the AFL didn't think of that. the ARLC has copied the AFL and other sporting bodies just like a lot of company's copy successful ideas off other companies.

I gave Gallop credit for running the game with basically nothing at his disposal. he did a good job holding the ship together.

for that last part; are you talking about the same Frank Lowy that blew 50 mil of gov money on one vote? he is your go to man as a judge?

Who's to say Gallop wouldn't have thought of it, and to that matter who's to say the ARLC did either? Maybe Telstra weren't happy with the return they got on the AFL deal and wanted to generate more coin for themselves as well.

I see you noted it was Governments $50m not Franks or the FFA's.

Getting rid of Gallop has been the greatest thing to happen since the ARLC took over IMO

And the AFL did not invent having a media division. The NFL had one long before they did

Different roles I know, but I prefer what we got out of Gallop than what we have out of Grant or Mattiske for that matter. And yes, the US Pro sports have had media unit for years, but in Oz we have followed the AFL. I just think it is laughable to think that the NRL wouldn't have media unit under Gallop now they have the cash to do.
