I feel like having a rant.. Not aimed at anyone here.
3-4 yrs ago the ARLC ( PVL & Abdo) publicly stated that they (ARLC) were opening bids for 3 new expansion teams. We all knew that PNG was going to be one (soft diplomacy) Perth-SEQ - Central Coast and NZ2x3 all put submissions forward. All were rejected.
Now this is me from NZ2 (Orcas) point of view. I don't know what all the other bids from every where have been doing - this is just the ORCAS.
They re-jigged the submission - were willing to pay ANY license fee the ARLC required.
They had had meetings with approx. 25 different schools to set up League teams and were successful.
They HAVE resource consent (needed in NZ) to build a COE in Rolleston (20min out of CHCH)
They (the backers of the ORCAs) OWN an entertainment quarter (PUB/Restaurant/offices) just down from the NEW COVERED STADIUM.
They (the backers) have spent tens of thousands of $$$$ on feasibility studies and the two public faces (Lowe & Chambers) have spent months and months talking to and arranging face to face meets with potential Coaching staff and all that that requires.
They were organizing junior satellite academies (x 25) with education systems built in - from Wellington to Dunedin.
I could go on ... but I won't.
Then.... Abdo states yesterday while at Magic Round that there WON'T be a new side in NZ for the foreseeable future.
When pressed to a time line - he couldn't even say if 2032 is a possibility. !!!!
I very much doubt if they (ARLC) could name the stadium in ChCh or how many it seats - or the same with the Dunedin one. Or the population of the South Island.
I have thought all along that they were ever only paying lip service to having a NZ2.
Bit of conspiracy theory - lol - is it strange that PVL and George Cameron are BOTH CEO's of the Racing industries in both their countries.
I truly believe that they are tone deaf - League in NZ has NEVER been as popular as it is right now. I played throughout the 80's and early 90's and it is just sooo much bigger now.
You could actually feel the excitement of a 2nd NRL side in NZ. It was palpable. - Now - the exact opposite is the feeling - and that is palpable as well.... :( ok I've finished.

The sooner you realise the whole expansion bid process was just a fake fishing trip to put pressure on WA and Aus govts to cough up big cash for two NRL owned new clubs the better for your mood!

All clubs now get NRL payments over the base grant for NRLW and pathway development.
NRL base grant is $17mill, some clubs get over $20mill total grant. ie
in 2024
NRL grants
Broncos $21.6mill
Panthers $18.2mill
Souths $17.8mill
Eels $19.4mill
Wests $19.6mill
Sharks $19.6mill
oh .. ok .. was not aware of that. I knew there was a grant - just not that it was specific to pathways. Thanks

Just feels like the strategy for expansion was 'who will stump up the most cash' rather than 'we want a team in X city/state/country to expand the game'. Also, given a favourable Premier in WA, it was a bit of now or never for league to have a team in WA. NZ and QLD will probably always be an option down the track, but WA maybe not.

Don’t give up all hope yet as it’s not a lost cause.

PNG was happening then it wasn’t before being confirmed as was Perth happening then it wasn’t then it was back on again then off again before being confirmed.

its all politics and part of the negotiating process.

I feel for you mate. I thought that NZ2 was the best option! Obviously! As I've been arguing their case for years because I truly think the NRL would have hit it out of the park with a team in Christchurch.

Perth was off the table only months ago if that's anything to go by, I think it's a negotiating tactic to bring the New Zealand bids together over the next few years and form what will be an even stronger bid and club !

Next year the Warriors will be playing at that new stadium in Christchurch and it will be sold out... that's when the drums really start beating!!!

Get a warriors “home” game there as well as a Australian based NRL team to take their “home” game against the warriors there also.

add in an end of season kiwi test and the new stadium should be rocking RL action at least 3 times a season.

Honestly, next year when there's a game there in front of 30k, there's going to be a lot of heads starting to turn!
This might also be part of the NRL strategy, a real ground swell surge.

Put NZ2 in the lost cause file at least until the TV deal after this next one rolls around … maybe it will start being talked about in 2030 for a 2033 start

Cameron George is a major advocate that NZ can’t take on a second team for another 10 years … I have repeatedly heard him say so on NZ radio and other media …people can dismiss it as selfish BS if they want from him but it definitely sets back the NZ2 push

Be patient lol

Nz2 will be the next team in

They were going to be team 18 until png and Perth has stupid govt money thrown at them

All they need to do is fund a coe and pay a license fee

The promise on junior spending if true will be amazing
