New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Might be a little light on Auckland and a little heavy of Waikato/BOP.
Could almost tie another Auckland to combine with Northland.
Then have Taranaki/Hawkes bay/poverty bay to maybe tie in with one or more of the Waikato/BOP team and maybe tack Manawatū onto one of the Welly teams?
Canterbury 1 focus on the city, ‘Canterbury’ 2 takes more of the South Island?
Sounds pretty similar to the old Lion Red Cup competition structure from the mid-'90s.

Maybe that was just too far ahead of it's time... and could be feasible now?

Yeah it is - I don't know if the NZRL seem that interested tho... they keep having these strange short term games - Nth Zone - Central Zone - Southern Zone.. but they only play about 6 games and that's it.. waste of money and effort. I thought my idea was pretty good -however - never heard a thing back.. lol. and I don't know what NZRL do with any money they receive from the NRL. I'm sure they could implement something long term and sustainable, and similar to the Aussie pathways structures. And cost wise is why I only had x 10 teams. I think the Orcas out-fit had a similar idea in their proposal.
And it would / could be a sustainable feeder system for any NZ2 Team.

I suspect the zone system really comes down to transport costs. Far less pressure on a limited budget to keep travel within a certain area (especially if it can be by car/bus) instead of travelling across the whole country, often by air.

There's also trying to balance any top-tier regional/provincial competition with local club competitions - and that's where you get such a short window for the zone-based competition we have.

Yeah I’d love an old school lion red cup comp to get the provincial pride going, guess the major stumbling block is the talent is pretty heavily stacked in Auckland and to a lesser degree the likes of Canterbury/Welly then bit a pretty massive gulf towards the likes of your Hb/Manawatu and Otagos

One way around that is some kinda talent dispersal systems like salary caps, drafts etc, to get that huge pool of Auckland talent spread around the country.. BUT that adds another cost because it's asking semi-pro players to relocate for the duration of the competition.

Which they just won't do.

It's OK for the majority of talent to be in one place in the juniors. If those players are given a professional opportunity in Wellington/Christchurch (NRL side) it wouldn't be a far fetched expectation then.

I know you don’t change a winning side but his development is good to hear

Maybe playing away from the pressure of being another Nathan

If he’s half as good as Nathan he’s better than Chanel

I’m pretty critical of CHT but he had a blinder on Sat- consistency is his weekness though.
Jett is still a massive risk to bail back to Aus once he’s developed, whereas TMM is pretty settled in NZ, his socials are full of hunting and fishing stories for example.

Honestly didn’t rate his game on the weekend

Even that try off a bomb it was a bad kick

He might prove me wrong but he’s an anchor
