You spend an extra 20 million pa on nz schools and juniors what will happen

A) most will go to super rugby since there is only one nz nrl team and most don’t want to move to Australia

B) you will just get kids who play union also playing league

It’s not going to grow the game

The priority is a second nz nrl team and maybe a third with an incremental increase in funding to the nzrl

Your comment that their funding should replicate the qrl or nswrl is just nuts

And the arl has done loads for the nzrl stop making out it hasn’t
There will be an extra 100 NRL first grade spots up for grabs. How many extra SR spaces will there be than now?
Kids moving to play Union and League is fine, they learn the RL skills earlier and get in the shop window of NRL. With 100 extra 1st grade spots there will be more opportunity for more kids if they playing RL.
Yeh $20mil a year to grassroots wont grow the amount of kids playing the game at all. Why the hell are we wasting $50mill on NSW and Qlnd then? Quick let the Albo know PNG doesnt need all that money, no point in WA funding 24 SHS programs then. cuckoo cuckoo

NRL funding to NZRL has been, and remains, a pittance compared to what they take out of the country in $'s and players.

A) the arl incresed funding to the nzrl.
B) they ensured the nzrl is guaranteed two home tests a year to make money off

Nz is under the control of the nzrl. They couldn’t run a chook raffle.

And yeh we will need more juniors to cover for clubs like Perth and Melbourne who won’t be able to produce many or any regular nrl players

This is a funny discussion where you're all kinda right. It not a black and white. It's a little bit of everything...
At the moment, it's a whole bunch of nothing...
Do we need more kids playing in schools in NZ? Yes, of course.
Does NZ need more funding? Yes, of course.
Would NZ benefit from a national comp akin to Q-CUP? Yes, of course.

What will push the progression of the game in NZ is obviously the inclusion of a second NZ team. That will immediately drive the game in NZ and all those pathways.

It makes no logical sense why we aren't having a green light for NZ2 fast tracked other than:
QRL
NSWRL
ARL
I'm starting to think that these organisations are very concerned about an awakened NZRL...how it may impact their slice of the pie, their ability to scout young kiwis ,when tests are bigger than origin, the kiwis win and start generating revenue...

I think that the QRL,NSWRL AND ARL are working hard to keep the kiwis in the bottle.

You could well be right. Self interest has always held the game back. Broncos not wanting a second team in Brisbane (and probably not even in QLD) is a classic example.

Except the NZ govt isnt offering to build infrastructure like a CofE and jnr pathways for the club. So will the NRL foot that bill as well?
Hi. The Orcas Bid team have already publicly stated, they have plans - land - costings - resource consent and funds ready for a brand new C of E 20mins out of ChCh - and PVL has seen those plans.. I keep reading posts on here that they (Orcas Bid Team) are fill a shit and dreams.
Again... they have publicly stated that they are / were prepared to pay any license fee the NRL deemed to be enough.
The Orca Bid Backers are one of, if not the, biggest group in NZ or Canterbury of Developers - Land owners - Sub-Divisions - Hotels - Bars - masses of Commercial property - and, I for one am hugely disappointed PVL has squashed the expansion plans. In the meantime - The Sydney Roosters have just signed a 5yr partnership deal with the biggest College in Rolleston - includes life after footy courses - training modules - trips to Sydney .... and Canterbury Bulldogs have a full time mini Academy here Meantime .... we wait.. and wait, while the goal posts are moved to God Knows where... :(

How many games in Wellington ? Got any idea what the breakup will be on home games

If the talk of building academies all of nz is true then sure it’s a massive win for rugby league

As I thought, NRL in no rush to decide on club 20:

“Not in our immediate plans”: V’Landys provides NRL expansion update

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'Landys has revealed the NRL's grand plan for a 20-team competition may not be in its immediate future.

The NRL have long had intentions of making it a 20-team competition following the successful addition of the Dolphins ahead of the 2023 season.
2025 will be the third year with a bye, and it's believed that is something the NRL are keen to remove, however, as it stands, the NRL may wind up a 19-team competition sooner rather than later, with the bye to remain.
The NRL have already confirmed a Papua New Guinea team will enter the competition in 2028 on the back of confirmed Federal Government funding, and a Perth team is rumoured to be also in the mix to join the NRL, potentially as early as 2027.
A New Zealand-based team - potentially based on the south island of the country - has also since been floated as a potential 20th team to close the bye and bring the competition to where the NRL would like it long-term.
But the bye isn't the issue for V'Landys. Speaking to News Corp, he admitted a 20th team is simply not in the immediate plans of the competition right now despite past commentary on expansion.
“The 20th team is not in our immediate plans,” V'landys told the publication.
“As I've said all at all times, the business case has to stack up and at this stage, the business case doesn't stack up (for a 20-team NRL).
“Nineteen teams is possible because we believe the business case stands up, but we won't do anything without going back to our (existing) clubs (for consultation).
“We've just had the annual general meeting (last week) and they (the 17 clubs) are an important stakeholder and they are players in this.
“When we determine what we believe is a strong business case (for 20 teams), we will then provide that business case to the clubs, players and state authorities to show why we are doing it.
“But at this stage, that business case (for 20 teams) has not been established.”
There are multiple bids on the table in New Zealand, but with potentially all of them set to be cast by the wayside, it will be up to the potential franchise chiefs to make the business case to the NRL.
The Perth-based team is also not yet over the line following recent funding complications, however, the NRL and Western Australian state government are still in conversation around how that bid would move forward and bring itself into the NRL.
Whether a Perth team enters the competition or not, the NRL will have its ninth game per week in the next TV deal following the addition of the Papua New Guinea-based team, which will allow for the competition to make a business case for an increased rights deal.
TV rights in the NRL are expected to be keenly contested at the next round of negotiations, with the NRL and ARLC also now looking at the possibility of breaking off State of Origin from the main contract.

As far as they have said in news articles - Games will be played in ChCh and Dunedin (Both Covered stadiums) - with "some" games, probably trials, played in Nelson and on the Coast. None in Wellington.

From what I understand - Chalmers 'owns (ed)" the name and because he was tied up with Wellington League, the name got sort of "used" for their rep teams - but it is not a Wellington name. But I can understand the confusion it courses.
A great name tho. And they (Orcas) are a common sight all over NZ.
