Swans grant went up by 6 million last year

So their revenue funding is now on par with all the loser afl clubs

Victoria park is going to look bad with 15k in a 60k seater stadium
yep really struggling lol. 9 clubs in Sydney havent stopped AFL carving out a niche.
If its 3 or 4 In SEQ equally wont make any difference to the Lions.
There's lots of strong arguments for a 3rd Brisbane club, a false belief that it will somehow kill AFL in Qlnd isnt one of them.

Swans 2024:
Key items contributing to the financial outcome for the year include:
  • Operating income increasing year-on-year by 19% to $73.2million
  • 75,152 Sydney Swans members, which is a new club record
  • Average home game attendances of more than 38,000 at the SCG
  • Membership and match day revenue of $19m (up from $18.2in 2023)
  • Strong on-field performance highlighted by 17 home-and-away match wins, two home final wins and a Grand Final appearance in the men’s competition

Dolphins need to be averaging 30k imo before Ipswich come in

Otherwise membership finances and juniors already a massive club anyway

Hope to see broncos go back to 43k plus and dolphins at 30k then Ipswich should get 25k

That would strangle afl in Queensland
I'm not really that concerned with AFL here mate. Their TV ratings and crowds are flat as defending premiers (TV ratings pathetic actually) and the Broncos and Dolphins crowds are up on the back of neither being particularly inspiring the last couple of years.

The AFL had their moment in the sun when the Superleague war was on. Both the Lions and Swans will struggle to grow from here and GWS and Suns will just never get the foothold the AFL were hoping for.

That's a reassuring read on the situation - so Brisbane/South East Queensland doesn't need team 20 & can wait for 21 or 22 (if they need another team at all), and we can focus on additional NZ team(s) then :)

Happy days.

Have to say with conformation that we are def going to 19 clubs, and by default means we will def be going to 20, that there hasnt been a lot more noise from the NZ bids? Have they been told they arent ever getting a chance or juts been asked to stay quiet I wonder?
I put the silence down to two factors.

Firstly, NZ not having a doggedly persistent Rugby League media contingent akin to what's in NSW/Qld.

Just look at how the media has pored over every aspect of PNG & Perth bids in Australia.. none of that here, and in fact since the bids eased back on their public statements there's been little poking & prodding from media here.

Secondly, the NRL delivered the whole field of NZ bids a hammer blow by knocking them all back - it's been suggested that this was with the intention to get them to conceal into ONE bid that has the strength of all of them combined.. but we haven't got to that stage. Maybe the radio silence is due to the work ongoing to try and sharpen the bids or even try to weld something together from them?

I think the nrl realises that just to get Perth and png up and running is a big job and maybe they need to focus on these two for the next couple years before exploring another expansion.

Id say there won’t be much news on team 20 till after PNG are up and running

Nrl is focused on the tv deal now

Nz2 won’t be on the radar till that’s sorted out and the new salary cap and club funding models are locked in

There’s loads of time now anyway

But I’m sure whoever gets the nz tv rights will want another team

The warriors are easily the biggest rugby club in the country

Talk will heat up next year once wahs are playing Anzac Day game in the new stadium or whichever game it is that is held there

That's a good point.

Considering Perth being added in 2027 & PNG in 2028, that means we get to 19 in 2028...and odd numbered competition sizes go for up to about 5 years.. so that's 2028-2032ish..

Assuming a 20th team debuts 2033 (about the far end of that scenario) the 20th team wouldn't have to be announced until 2030 or 2031.

Plenty of time for NZ 2 or SEQ 4 to find the right model to make them irresistible.... OR even for some wildcard to come out of the blue.

Assuming png does come in 2028, or I have a feeling it will be 2029, team 20 won’t be till 2032 earliest.

Therefore there’s no need to announce anything till around 2029 at least or even 2030. So there’s no media talk about it because there’s nothing to report. NRL have probably fully parked it for now and focusing on Perth, png, new media deal, super league, international footy etc for now

Yup, your comments pretty much match my speculation on the timeframe.. and I imagine the handful of bidding parties for that 20th spot (NZ based & SEQ based) will have had feedback from the NRL on what was good and what needed more work.

The NRL will be happy to leave that in the bids' laps, and check-in again after a while to re-survey the field & see what's been improved - and if anything really stands out once the bids have had time to come up with a new iteration.

I agree. The NRL can sit and wait out team 20. There is enough to do as it is.

Tv deal will be done by end of season. NRL Europe will be focus after. Team 20 will come in 2032 to coincide with Olympics.

Another factor is politics. At the moment we have an austerity Government here in NZ, with the general election due 2026.

In the event that the current National-led Government gets replaced by a Labour-led Government, that might appeal to the NRL as an avenue to try and get more resources poured into a NZ bid.

Still, National losing next year would be unprecedented, as they've never been chucked out after just one term (even though they're doing a good job trying to get chucked out!).. so might be the following election in 2029 when that window to Government largesse opens... which still works with a 2032-debut timeline (just!)

The NRL statement recently was that a 20th team wasn't on the NRL radar.
What exactly are you confused about?
The NRL needs to focus on Perth and PNG for years before even thinking about another team. At this stage you'd be made to waste money on a lighting bill for an office for a "bid"..
It'll be years mate... move on.
I'm really looking forward to seeing Perth come together ( which I thought you'd be doing??)
Anyway, exciting times for RL !!
Up da wahs !!!

A man from Hull living in Perth that follows RL... researching the Swans to share in a NZ thread...are you pissed?
Get a bloody life.
If you like AFL, there's nothing wrong with that but maybe find some AFL friends?

You might be two elections away from anything happening with the NZ2 bid … although fortunately they won’t need the lead up time like a PNG or even a Perth …

It’s probably likely to be parked until 2029:for a 2031-32 start ...
