Perth bears are only owned by the nrl because they didn’t trust the Cummins bid and didn’t want the bears or Perth to ruin it with infighting

Nobody knows who owns png there was an article it was as owned by png super funds

The nrl doesn’t want to own expansion clubs its not like the afl
There was no other bidder in Perth and the WA govt was adamant it was not into owning a team so the NRL had to own it if it wanted a team in WA and to have the Bears back in the comp. I would be very doubtful if any QLD or NZ bid would have teamed up with the Bears so it was WA or bust for the Bears and the NRL was happy to oblige.

It doesn’t seem like much of a mystery. There is so much work to be done getting up Perth and PNG and the earliest a team 20 would be coming in is probably around 2032. The NRL have no reason to be discussing it yet (at least publically).

There was a back up plan for the Bears but nothing that would work as well as Perth for them.

I think 3 new teams in the space of 3 or 4 years, is recipe for an uneven comp.

Why? To generate international interest?

Can you run me through the incredible interest you showed in the local codes at Athens, Rio or Bejing?
Ping pong (or AFL aka aerial ping pong in Australia) has boomed off the back of the Beijing Olympics and its crowds and TV rights are larger than the NRL.

Rugby League is pushing to be in the Olympics in 2032 ( 9s I'm assuming)
Which is in Brisbane...I'm sure the cross promotion is enticing.
Don't shoot the messenger but governments fund Olympic sports...

Not my idea or preference but it's not hard to connect the dots when they're already touching.

Cross promotion for who though? Not Queenslanders.

It's an irrelevance to our code.

Having rugby league at the Brisbane Olympics will be a novelty like breakdancing. You can count the number of countries that play the game to any material level on 1 hand and I would be shocked if it made a future appearance.

The NRL should have used the Olympics to campaign for an upgrade/rebuild of Suncorp or a separate new rectangular stadium. Having rugby league played at the Olympics will have minimal if any spin off benefits to the game. The NRL administrators should have been working the phones like the AFL to get their snouts in the infrastructure trough.

PNG super funds? If they even exist in any meaningful capacity how would they have the money to invest in something like that? PNG doesn’t have the same compulsory super framework as Australia, hell I doubt that the vast majority of the population even have a taxable income.

League has been trying to get into the Olympics for ages

The other rugby code uses the fact that it’s an Olympic sport as a huge selling point

It also stops league from being played at the Olympics / getting access to govt grants around the world until it changes its name and not include rugby saying they are the only rugby code

According to Troy Grant from the IRL olympics status will guarantee funding for rugby league in developing league countries as they only fund or almost exclusively fund Olympic sports. League 9s would have been played in Brisbane but for a decision not to include it by the QLD Labor Government. The IRL are now asking the new liberal Government to include League 9s. He, Grant, did not sound optimistic. It’s amazing that such a fickle decision could have such significant impacts on us getting the game running more successfully in so many bloody countries.
