Round 12: Brisbane Broncos v Newcastle Knights

Venue: Suncorp Stadium
Date: Sunday June 1, 2003
Time: 3.00 pm

Brisbane Broncos:
1: Darren Lockyer
2: Scott Minto
3: Brent Tate
4: Michael DeVere
5: Stuart Kelly
6: Ben Ikin
7: Shaun Berrigan
8: Shane Webcke
9: Richard Swain
10: Petero Civoniceva
11: Gorden Tallis (c)
12: Dane Carlaw
13: Tonie Carroll

Interchange:
14: Corey Parker
15: Andrew Gee
16: Brad Meyers
17: Casey McGuire
18: Barry Berrigan

Swain is back on deck this week to give an almost injury free squad. Of course this is the big home coming to Lang Park. The team is trying to keep their emotions at bay and keep it all low key. Apparently 40,000+ tickets have been sold so expect an icey reception for Newcastle.

Newcastle Knights:
1. Robbie O'Davis
2. Timana Tahu
3. Matthew Gidley
4. Mark Hughes
5. Anthony Quinn
6. Sean Rudder
7. Andrew Johns (c)
8. Josh Perry
9. Danny Buderus
10. Matthew Jobson
11. Steve Simpson
12. Daniel Abraham
13. Ben Kennedy

Interchange:
14. Clint Newton
15. Luke Quigley
16. Kurt Gidley
17. Craig Hall
18. Andrew Price

This will be Andrew Johns' 200th first grade game for the Newcastle Knights so that'll provide alot of motivation for him in this game. Newcastle have never beaten Brisbane in Brisbane and they'll be facing hostile conditions for this match. It should be a good game.

hmmm tough game for Newcastle. They'll be keen for a win though, so hopefully they can pull it off.

There is a wierd feeling of optisism creeping in at Newcastle.

Logic says they can't win, but everyone is feeling very upbeat about the game.

We usually go to Brisbane and cop a hiding as well as heaps of injuries, but guys like Kennedy and Simpson are wanting to show something this weekend I think.

Simpson will be the guy to watch. I have never seen him tackle so strong as he did at the start of the Cronulla game. He went off early with concussion, but I was feeling sorry for guys he was hitting in the first part of the game. A big game will get him an origin spot, and I think he will be trying to make every tackle count.

Roopy this game does worry me. I cast my mind back to the day Brisbane turned up at ANZ stadium. The Eels didn't have a hope in hell against a Broncos side in front of a huge crowd but the Eels won that match.
The last side the Broncos played at Lang Park was the Knights in an emotional farewell, hopefully the emotions aren't the downfall of this current side on Sunday.

This is going to be a cracker of a game and I wish I could have got to Brisse to see it.....
Hopefully my Knights boy's can pull off a win and give a great game. The players I want most to have a great game is Joey, BK, Simmo, Bedsy and Tahu... They deserve to be in Origin and if they great games they should be there...
Also Matt Gidley hopefully he has a good game and can be picked above lyons or Timmins who were not at there best in City/Country.

I wonder what Broncos fan will find to criticise the ref about, as far as I could see every 50/50 decision went their way.

It was a good team win, and the fact that Simmo went off injured early for the second week in a row makes it an even better win.

Simmo could be out for the season by what the commentators were saying. I'd give back those two points if we could have Simmo back. He has been smashing guys in tackles and he is really needed for later in the season.

The surprize was Hall playing second row, or it was a surprize to some. He was on the radio the other day saying he played all his junior football and his first senior football at second row before deciding he was too small and concentrating on his speed and playing centres for the last few years.

Kurt Gidley gave the attack heaps of variation. He must start at 5/8, and he and Johns will form a classic partnership over the next season and a half till Johns goes.

Matt Gidley continues to be in the best form he has been in in three years, and ironicly, he pulled down the pants of the guy who will probably be given his SOO spot tonight.

Tahu and Gidley are a double act. Why Hagan ever moves Tahu away from Gidley has to be one of the great mysteries, and they shouldn't put Tahu in soo if they are going to drop Gidley either.

Thank God for Brisbane centres. Tate is worth two tries in the bank every game if we attack the useless bugger. I always thought Newcastle would miss Walker for Brisbane, but Tate is so much more hopeless.

Roopy can I just say your a knob. You've admitted yourself you only see Tate play when Newcastle play the Broncos. So I'm really glad you've made the effort to judge a player from one or two matches a year.

Kelly put Tate under pressure all day. Why the Broncos persist with Kelly I have no idea. Hes useless on defence, has poor hands and can't defend against a bomb to save himself. Tate on the other hand has been just about the best centre in the game on form this year. Hes been one of the few shinning lights for the Broncos. I'd put him in any representative team ahead of turnstile Gidley any day of the week.

Yeah, fair call about Tate, I reckon he's probably the best centre in Australia at the moment. But I reckon Stuart Kelly's a decent player on the wing. He does go allright under the high ball, and he's got good speed, especially off the mark. He's also quite elusive and good to watch.

Bronco,
Mark Sargeant gives a wrap up of the game every Monday morning on radio, and he as much as said the Knights game plan was to put pressure on Tate, which is always a good plan IMO.

I notice that Tallis has given up his usual plan when playing the Knights of running at Gidley all day. He must have got sick of getting nowhere. It only took him about 10 games to work it out.
