Yeh it was meninga saying that

If we want a big tv deal next time it’s a non starter

All the extra value from expansion will be lost from less rounds
You might be right mate but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

At the moment the women's game, especially Origin and the Pacific Championships are basically free so they could be leveraged along with hopefully some healthy competition in the marketplace.

With afl staying at a longer season I can’t see us doing it

Internationals won’t bridge the gap

Internationals are a nice bonus to have on the club season

The game breaker in that may be nrlw. If they can make that popular and eventually it mirrors nrl for teams that’s a lot of extra content being watched.

I think int RL is only scraping the surface. Increase interest and have 8 week program over the year and it can make up nrl content reduction.

Nrlw is filler content too
Just like the pre season comp

The tv deal is the club comp and origin

If they go to tv with five less rounds they will only get a modest tv increase (even with 20 teams)

You are talking about potentially 20 percent less ratings for the game as a whole

More than that. 5 less Broncs games is not offset by PNG

Completely get what you're saying about the NRL season.

I do believe that there is heaps of potential in the international game though. We aren't there right now but if Aus v Tonga can get 700k and I'm sure Aus v NZ will do 1m, plus you've got Tonga v Samoa to capitalise on properly. I can see it being a huge cash cow if we get it right

i don`t think Tonga are ever going to be able to offer anything other than novelty value, the grandparent rule isn`t going to last much longer and the country is too small to provide enough players of a high enough quality to match it with first tier nations long term.
Samoa possibly more of a chance, especially if we start replacing union and/or really start raiding union stocks there, but with pop 250k iffy.
Realistically NZ is our best shot and that`s why a second team is vital, third and fourth would be killer. Fiji with pop 1m, a real chance but 20 years off and off course New Guinea who are prob ~ 10 years away as well.
So, best case scenario I see four tier 1 nations long term, but it`s a way off before we start turning it into a fully-fledged 3 or 4 team Tier 1 SH tournament that could be the consistent cash cow that would generate enough interest and income to start shortening our club season.
But get it right, we could have something similar to union`s six-nations down here every year. That would be massive.

You might get another 20 years (one generation out of Tonga) and then they'll slip a bit. As you said, Samoa not sure. Both sides will continue to complete but the way I see it is they'll switch places in the pecking order with PNG and Fiji, both of which are developing their own players and have populations to support home grown pathways.

Fiji and PNG will be the new Tonga and Samoa and will be pushing the big boys. The only sad thing about that those nations don't look like they will be able to replicate the levels of support you get from the Polynesian fans.

Tonga and Samoa provide loads of union players

Once our salary cap goes up enough we will be getting them as well

Tonga and Samoa will only get stronger from here imo

The international game absolutely has the potential to make up for 5 rounds of NRL. Big games bring the big money and international games have the potential to rate significantly higher than NRL games if we really push it hard. Yes the current pacific cup isn’t going to make up the difference but there is significant potential for growth.

I also think the potential for the NRLW is huge. Right now sure it’s not going to make up for less NRL but it’s a growing product. I do wonder if we’ll see them move it to more of a spring/summer comp to really increase the amount of content we have.

Why not just play 52 rounds ? Imagine how big the tv money will be !! We’d leave the AFL in our rear view mirror.

At some point you’ve got to draw a line in the sand, 19 rounds + a rivally round + wild card weekend is plenty.

I love the NFL less is more season, 16 games that matter !!! you’ll find a shorter season leads to larger crowds, larger tv audience and better quality games.

The nfl isn’t competing with a rival football code which has more than it does

If it did it would have a season which matched theirs

Afl games go for 3 hours so the nrl needs more content not less

I don’t think having a slightly shorter season + internationals is going to lose the nrl any fans, it might actually get us new fans if the games are better quality played in front of larger crowds.

We have internationals now

Less game means less ratings

Afl just extended their season too because the last tv negotiations weren’t going so good

No chance Fox / nine will agree unless they pay a lot less

Abdo talked about 19 rounds + wild card weekend…and im sure they would add in a rivalary weekend.

thats about a dozen games more than we currently have.

if they can get what the game is worth this time ( instead of mates rates ) and sell the season in packages we will still get a significant rise from the current deal.

They could just stop the nrl mid season during origin

That solves all the issues about player and spectator fatigue whilst still retaining content

There’s also been talk of the NFL extending their season anyway.
