There’s a snippet in Websters column claiming rival networks are wary of ten & paramount who are believed to be a genuine chance at securing games. Paramount Global boss Kevin Maclennan will be in Australia later this month, after attending Vegas games earlier this year.
It does seem that way. Paramount went big for cricket and AFL.

NRL is their last shot.

The NBL isn't too bad of a product. The problem I have with it and what makes it hard to watch is the advertising everywhere compared to the NBA.

Just like the Knights jersey, I'd buy a Sydney Kings jersey if it didn't have advertising everywhere.

Big Kev apparently got a bit excited during golden point in the Bulldogs V Dragons game ..

You suspect the NRL is revelling in the drama as it ramps negotiations for a new broadcast deal. The game swallows up the news cycle in the non-AFL states.
Is this the reason Channel 10 and Paramount are considered genuine chances of securing matches from 2028 onwards?
Paramount boss Kevin Maclennan.

Paramount boss Kevin Maclennan.
Certainly, rival networks bidding for the rights are wary. At the very least, they say, the interest will drive up the price. Ten and Paramount were left chastened after missing out on AFL rights three years ago.
Paramount Global president Kevin MacLellan attended the NRL’s season-opening matches in Las Vegas this year, spending most of the time on the sidelines. He will be in Australia later this month as V’landys ramps up negotiations in search of a $4bn deal.

Afl rejected them cause their app was hopeless and they have a small number of subs

but nrl would change that

seven and ten splitting the fta rights would be good

nine and stan are going to need to pay top dollar

and I would love to see nine lose it
I put Nine on last night because I had logged out of Kayo because I thought the game was over, my god, the blokey, braindead nonsense that greeted me shocked me, I`m not sure who their target audience is, but it is awful.

They are merging hbo & paramount+ which will give them a pretty enticing catalog for people, they also have UFC rights I think, so getting the NRL on top of that would probably make them the dominant platform in Australia.

Deadset haven’t changed their production in 20 years.
They have actually, it’s become worse. People used to complain about the late Rabs era of commentary on here in the 2010s into early 2020s, if only it was known then how bad it could get. At least we still had people like Sterlo involved then providing some quality commentary.

Plus, they’ve introduced gems like commentators sitting in the studio rather than going to the games, leading to flat, disinterested commentary and horrendous audio mixing.

Spot on, Sterlo was a shining light, and Ray Warren was known for keeping a lid on the nonsense. I was praying that Vautin would get the hint when Sterlo left, but no chance, he really set a low bar. Credit where credit due though, Billy Slater is very good.
Greg Alexander on Kayo now is fantastic, I really enjoy his work.

Bears may bring back Monday night footy
One of the biggest unknowns coming into season 2027 is where the added match caused by the addition of the Perth Bears is going to fit into the TV schedule.
One thing that is certain: the extra game won’t be a freebie for the networks. The NRL will seek to get revenue from it as part of the new rights deal they are negotiating. As it stands, the NRL has ploughed on with expansion without giving the free-to-air and pay TV partners a big say.

The Perth Bears enter the NRL in under a year. Rivals are hardly shaking in their boots
They have been minor players in the decision-making process and there has not been huge consideration given to whether they wanted the Perth and PNG teams, nor how they’d like to execute the additional game.
The value of the extra game is yet to be determined. Right now, the thinking from the NRL is Monday night football. Sunday night at 6.15pm would not be a viable option as another game interfering with the 6pm news would not be welcomed by a free-to-air broadcaster.
The Friday night 6pm game on Fox Sports is off Broadway, but it can impact the news broadcast, which is a pillar for free-to-air networks.
Monday night football would have to land on pay TV, as a show like Married At First Sight on Nine is a ratings juggernaut, and there would be resistance to replacing a show like that in prime time.

They just make shit up. Automatically assume because Perth is the new side "well then they'll be playing Mondays". Surely they're a lock for the late slot on Saturday.

Ten or seven probably want that time slot

esp seven as it doesn’t clash with afl

Or they could just play the potential Sunday night game at 7pm after the news

It also is ridiculous to say that the other channels just accept that Monday nights is just Nine’s territory now and that MAFS is some untouchable giant

Reality TV shows come and go … and some once high ratings shows are all but a distant memory now … Big Brother, Amazing Race, Biggest Loser, Survivor , Master Chef , MKR… they just fall off a cliff one year and I suspect that will happen to MAFS
