More teams will dilute the playing pool.

No tv or streaming company on the planet is going to pay more $$ for less rounds of a diluted product.

Would anyone here who usually bought a 6 pack of full strength beer pay more for a 4 pack of mid strength beer?

Nein are paying 120 million approx including origin

So they are paying around 70 to 80 million for the club games whilst the afl gets close to double that from seven

Nein aren’t losing any money lol

NRL regular games being loss leaders, sounds like complete bullshit to me.

TV stations would literally just tell the NRL to f**k off, and bid on Origin and Finals only if that was the case.

If the NRL insisted that they take the regular season games as well, Stations would put the lowest effort possible into producing games and bury them on secondary channels.

Well you don't think that a RL fan will be watching or listening to the 6pm Friday game? Or the 2pm Sunday game?
Hell in some cases there is a game before and after the 4pm Sunday game.

I will give you the Thursday games would be a decent money earner
Sorry are you saying that these games (6pm Fri, 2pm Sunday) are losing money??

at $115m a year / 30 weeks of NRL.

Means a week of NRL costs $3.8m. Plus production costs.

Sunday in particular gets roughly 200k to their pre show which has 80% of the ads.

An Audience of that size isn't going to make the $1m or so needed for that game to make money

you can take out $40mill for Origin rights, $10mill for finals rights. $5mill for radio rights

So in effect for the NRl regular season they are paying in region of $60mill for.

3 games a week 26 rounds (with byes) approx. $830k avg a game, plus production. I guess they make money out of it or they wouldnt keep bidding every contract.

They can't get Origin without getting the bludger Sunday afternoon games.

That and the event games likely even it out.

That will be the issue with breaking it up unless they sell certain days. Ch9 having both Sunday games and Fox having both Friday for example

That $60m includes extra blockbusters like a 2nd Cows v Broncs game. You don't get that with 19 rounds either, so it is a balancing act

The Sunday game gets more than 200k viewers though doesn't it? And it's the lead in to the news, which is what they value.

No way, TV just broadcasts loss makers cause they have to, otherwise they would just bury it, like TV does with other codes.

They sell advertising in packages though so its not like any specific time slot, outside the GF is being sold on its own. Its a package deal across X amount of minutes/adverts in a season. It obviously works for them otherwise they wouldnt be so keen to bid each time, even if they refuse to pay more lol

Not the pre game which are where the ads are.

Depends how much they make from SOO, Good Friday and the other big games

I don't think across a year they are having huge losses but not every game makes money

More exclusive games on FTA changes that and makes that side of it more valuable

Do you think the NRL will outstrip the AFL in the next television rights deal?

“I do. The game rates it head off. I remember once Kerry Stokes said to me the people who invented your game must have done it for TV, because it is played on a rectangular field and show on a rectangular box, just a great TV product.“
Making sense:
"You had clubs in unusual places like Perth, Adelaide and the Hunter Valley. All are gone now. Which could have stayed?
"The one which was closest to making a dollar was Adelaide. We had a very parochial one-team city. It was sad to see them folded."

Delusional:
"Was Super League a success or a failure?
"If you look at it from the point of view of where the game is now, it was a fantastic success."

It set the game back 30 years.

RLPA CEO Clint Newton has shared his belief that the NRL should consider reducing the season’s length in a bid to improve player welfare and performance.

At present, the first games of rugby league occur in February each year with the NRL All Stars and trials, with four teams flying off to Las Vegas a few weeks later, and run right through until September for most sides, who begin their pre-seasons around November.

Given the gruelling nature of rugby league, which demands immense physical effort from every competitor some, including Newton and several NRL players, believe the current calendar is unsustainable.
peaking to SEN, Newton revealed a 22 round season is a “really nice sweet spot.”

While this would mark a big drop from the current 27 round campaign, Newton explained the RLPA “know statistically from our players that they believe a reduction in the number of matches they’re asked to play will produce better results for them.”

He noted these better results include longer careers, fewer injuries, improved recovery time, and crucially for fans and stakeholders in the game an improvement in player performance.
