Why wouldn’t ratings be everything for subscription tv

subscription tv is based almost entirely on subcriptions.

Ratings on Fox are used to determine advertising rates. Foxtel annually has more broadcast partners on Foxfooty than Foxleague. We dont know how much each pays, but make of that what you will. The same applies to AFl on Seven and NRL on Nine.

Aggregating multiple games is manipulation of the highest order

Its also how you get more money from the broadcaster. And everyone who knows about the ratings knows what they represent. Maybe try showing Storm games live in Melbourne every week for a start.

If you show the national game into Perth every week and almost never show the Wa team, if that ever eventuates, the ratings benefit will be negligble.

Obviously something which you’ve never called them out for

I did repeatedly when it was happening

Ratings and subscribers are obviously correlated Einstein

Obviously league subscribers on Fox would be 30 to 50 percent more

So by aggregating figures it’s being dishonest and comparing them to one nrl game at the same time is meaningless

Not necessarily.

Thats a big assumption.

if thats what you need to sleep at night sure. But dont bitch at me about your deal not lining up wth the AFL then, especially on FTA

I don’t think the nrl can necessarily beat the afl on fta

On pay tv it can and by a lot

The way you and your mate are talking it’s impossible for league to get a bigger tv deal than afl and they should just accept it

That’s defeatist thinking and the kind David gallop and Todd Greenberg specialised in

Pvls job is to be number one and I’m backing him being able to lay the platform for revenue growth that will achieve this

There’s reasons why the nrl can get less and reasons why it can get more than afl

It’s his job to emphasise the positives and not believe any negatives thrown at him

We're pointing out market conditions at present. No one said anyone just had to sit there and accept it.

In ur case its the difference between realism and idealism.

Pvls job is to be number one and I’m backing him being able to lay the platform for revenue growth that will achieve this

yes, thats not our job though. Obviously yours though.

Sure.

It’s his job to emphasise the positives and not believe any negatives thrown at him

Its his job to get a decent deal done. History suggests that as far as the NRL is concerned, hes not been enitrely successful when it comes to media rights.

Past performance is never an accurate predictor of future performance

Obviously look at how channel seven is going now after overpaying for the afl

Not since 1995 has the nrl had more clubs than the afl. That content gap will be gone

Idealism isn’t accepting a rival sport deserves more money than you do that’s just stupidity.

And it’s not your job to keep being negative but here you are

And remember there’s significant upside from nz and maybe even a png tv deal which as ususal you have totally ignored

I gave ways RL can maximise money.

None seems to be on the table so that limits the potential deal.

NRLW as a stand alone seems a no brainer but doesn't seem part of the plan

You’re the one that accused me of watching too much league and not other sports

So you are saying that afl getting close to three times the nrl deal is justified right

Time to take those meds

Origin alone means the fta rights are valuable

And then on subscription tv where ads don’t mean much the nrl dwarfs afl

Yes because there isn't a single metric that states RL and AFL should get the same.

more games of AFL on FTA for starters.

If 10/Paramount were prepared to stump up $600m for the fumbleball it`s hard to think they wouldn`t be interested in the other nationally significant sport.

Need national coverage 1st.

Storm are probably favourites next year. If ch10 had the rights there are parts of Victoria that wouldn't be able to watch them if they made the GF.

That is not going to help the game. They need to get their shit together

BUT

NRL should break the rights up and sell them Monday night or something. Motivate them to fix up the system and test the waters for both sides

Pay tv subscribers

Origin

Pretty funny the nrl are adding 3 teams and you are valuing their games at zero for both Australia and nz / png

So without those expansion teams and women’s origin we would be getting less or the same huh ?

Wildcards are Monday night footy and Fox to stream origin

It kind of is.

Obviously look at how channel seven is going now after overpaying for the afl

Overpaying is your opinion. Seven dont seem to believe they did.

Not since 1995 has the nrl had more clubs than the afl. That content gap will be gone

Not on FTA it wont.

Idealism isn’t accepting a rival sport deserves more money than you do that’s just stupidity.

again, no one said anyone should just accept it. Your making shit up.

And it’s not your job to keep being negative but here you are

one of my jobs IS to report on actual industry data, and not the hopes and dreams of WB1234

And remember there’s significant upside from nz and maybe even a png tv deal which as ususal you have totally ignored

there MAY be an upside. I dont think there is from PNG at all, which is part of why the license deal is so big. And NZ remains to be seen. Theres little in the way of ratings data to go one way or another

Sevens share price would beg to to differ

Post what you want idc but regarding the nrl tv deal its all negative

That’s why I discount biased sources

Nz and png will be part of the nrl. Counting their ratings (lmao I know they don’t exist) and value for local broadcasters could well be significant

You’ve assumed the png rights are worth nothing and the nz rights with a second team won’t go up a lot

The nrl beats afl by 30 million viewers currently. With 3 extra teams (even with two less rounds) that gap will be 70 million viewers

There’s an argument that just the Australian tv deal should be more than the fumblers

Before even thinking about nz and potentially png

Sevens share price isnt solely predicated on how much they paid in media deals.

Itll be positive when theres something positive to write about it. at the moment, the evidence suggests it will be a less than stellar deal. I cant help what your tea leaves say.

That’s why I discount biased sources

Ive yet to see you quote an unbiased source, anything from News Limited or Nine Media has its biases. Your twitter mate certainly doesnt count.

We're all guessing here.

The nrl beats afl by 30 million viewers currently.

Average viewers aggregated. Which is not the be all and end all you think it is.

With 3 extra teams (even with two less rounds) that gap will be 70 million viewers

possibly. but will it even matter.

There’s an argument that just the Australian tv deal should be more than the fumblers

That argument has been being had for 40 years.

Before even thinking about nz and potentially png

Look at the revenue for PNG broadcasters. Its not particularly high.

One million subscribers watching a trial game you wonder how many millions an nrl team will get

Since you can’t come up with a prediction which you can be held too it’s all just hogwash

I’ve given a range of 500 to 600 million

The png team will also be getting 130 million from the png govt

This will be a blockbuster bid

And the nrl also has Monday night football or streaming of origin up its sleeve to go with the extra content

Look at the revenue these broadcasters make in PNG.

Since you can’t come up with a prediction which you can be held too it’s all just hogwash

Being unwilling to come up with a figure at this time doesnt make every other link, article and report hogwash.

I’ve given a range of 500 to 600 million

Good for you. Doesnt mean everyone else has to jump in with you.
