That’s why the AFL will always get a better FTA broadcast deal, they capitalise on their peak audience by having a commercial break after every goal and a 4min block between quarters.
having said that, there’s no reason 9 can’t increase in game commercials. Golf, Formula 1 .. etc all have Picture in Picture adverts. There’s no reason nrl games couldn’t have a 15 second Picture in Picture advert while players are walking to a scum.
in regards the the nba, they signed a record deal but have lost a staggering 48% of their audience over the past decade and ratings are down 28% from last year. Yikes !!! Marquee match ups ( Boston v lakers ) rate about 3m, roughly the same as Origin in a country with a population of 330m.
It isn't just AFL. Cricket and Tennis get crazy money compared to the actual content.
Tennis you are looking at 1m people for 10 hours a day for 2 weeks. An ad after every game
Cricket every session gets 1m. So you are looking at 15m people a test. An ad after every over is a decent haul for TV.
NBA is a hard one to gauge on purely ratings. Aug last year Disney did a break down and ESPN streaming is crazy numbers and money wise. - this doesn't show in ratings
Amazon starts next year they will want people to go buy their stuff as a flow on.
CBS - starting gives FTA coverage so no other products to flog off. Is a good guide to use.
That said I am a Knicks fan. Often I am watching the local MSG feed while Kayo has the national Coverage. Losing a huge market like NY would dent the ratings.
so the success is hard to gauge on that alone but in the future. I see Fox or DAZN whatever it is called. Having say AFL on Sat. NRL Sunday or something like that because both will get too high to be afforded
