PVL will only be thinking about the next deal …not the one after …a lot will change anyway for the next one …things move quickly in that space

Despite what some on here think. His bosses are the clubs and the players. They will be expecting the grant and cap to not go backwards.

Particularly when the govt sugar hit that is PNG is turned off

Isnt production of the game in the region of $50mill? Presumably nrl would have to wear that for some of these streaming services being thrown around?

Yep. With the adding of PNG and Perth that won't be cheap. So the makeup of the deal is key
It’s why it’s likely we will see fox retain imo. Another streaming service is going to have to offer more than fox plus production costs to beat them.

Another streaming service isn’t stuck with overpaying for the afl deal and needing nrl subscribers to pay for it

They can just pay whatever one million plus subscribers is worth to them

They would instantly be the number on pay tv / streaming service in Australia and would make so much extra money selling those nrl subscribers extra content

The offer though would need to match fox + nrls production costs + loss of news ltd support across their media platforms + nrl taking the risk with a new partner .
That would be a very big chunk of change. Not impossible but unlikely.
As long as there’s enough genuine interest from others to get fox to dig deep then that’s fine. Fox dont do a badjob with the game really, as much as I hate scummy news ltd and would love to see them gone from the game forever.
ch9 however, more than happy to see ch10 or even 7 take over our fta.

probably likely Dazn “retains” the NRL rights ….after just buying Fox recently .. wouldnt be a good look for whoever made that call ….it would be crazy though to see that massive shift in the subscriber base …

Just easier to spend some of that Saudi oil money I think … saves a bit of face this time

Pay tv networks have to make money from their content which covers broadcast costs

Foxtel has always been profitable

Has it ever paid nrl what it’s worth v afl ? Nope

Given its a subscription based model there is no planet where the afl tv rights are worth the 430 million pa they claim Foxsports are paying for them

Given 75 to 80 percent of the most watched programs on Foxtel are nrl then Foxsports should be paying the nrl 600 million pa which they obviously won’t

That’s why Fox are vulnerable now to stan

That 3 billion Dazn paid for Foxtel could all go up in smoke if they lose the nrl tv deal

News Ltd paper / digital coverage is poor. They couldn’t do a worse job if they hated the sport

One million subs at 25 a month is 300 million pa (broadcast costs covered by advertising)

One million subs at 30 a month is 360 million pa

1.5 million subs at 25 a mont is 450 million

1.5 million subs at 30 a month is 540 million

Then you upsell those nrl subscribers other content like Foxtel does

Kayo premium is currently 40 per month !

At 40 a month one million subs is worth 480 million in revenue

Etc

You think? think it’s bad now imagine of news ltd didn’t have the rights how they would report the game.

I’m interested, given you feel afl is over valued, why you think fox keep paying overs Deal after deal?

Given the highest rated fox games get 400-500k and most rate sub 250k audience do you think there is 1 million subscribers purely driven by nrl content?

Is the ptv/streamingnumber subscriber number or audience? Ie if 4 in my household are watching only 1 subscriber is counted?

we dont have data on kayo subscribers, some are paying $20, some $25 some $40. I suspect most aren’t paying$40 lol

Spite over super league
Afl being in a stronger position via no super league
Afl not being half owned by News Ltd
Afl having stronger leaders who don’t believe bs written in the newspaper

Afl promised to deliver a national Comp. It hasn’t nobody watches it in 53 percent of Australia

Remember I mentioned pay tv not fta so subscriber numbers are the key metric game length is basically irrelevant

Foxtel average is 650 to 670k across Foxsports and kayo and growing

That’s the hardcore base and assuming some people don’t watch all games you would think 1 million would be solely for nrl

And another 500k to one million somewhat for nrl

most of that has not been relevant for the last three tv deals they have signed
news ltd are a cut throat business, I doubt they are paying any more than they can get away with. Why they continually value afl higher than nrl I guess only they can answer.

Even selling Origin seperate needs NRL production.

I think so too, Not sure they are setup to take everything in house yet. Fox/DAZN has all the pub/club contracts.

How much they are forced to pay is the question

I know they are a complete pack of merkins but hopefully every games stays on Fox. Streaming simply isn't good enough.
LU will also die without game threads, which will disappear since streaming is delayed by 10-30 seconds
