where did they resurrect Breen from ? The Herald clearly missing Andrew Webster these days

If the only two competitors are Nine and DAZN .. don’t expect much of an increase …

He says Seven are an option but anyone else is “fanciful “ …. If 7 are a genuine competitor to pick up the NRL rights in addition to their AFL commitments, I’ll walk from Palm Beach to Wollongong … they would be a one night a week option at best
Seven will likely bid for origin on its own

They don’t have much money for anything else

Stan / nine want the lot that’s where the competition comes in

Nine appointee former commissioner and Foxtel person Amanda Laing to handle the negotiations and she just started last week

Nine are cashed up after selling domain.com website

I would be very skeptical that 9 is spending $3 billion on NRL… wouldn’t mind seeing it happen though

They made a huge offer last time for all the afl rights. Every game

A losing bid? Means zero to this situation…. Well wait and see … Anyway … what do you think of Breen mentioning 7 as a competitior for the FTA rights … not just Origin? If anyone in the media is pushing that as an option than sit down and shut up

That losing bid pushed Foxtel up

That’s what competitive tension is

Except this time they will have sold domain for 2.8 billion

The sport that is seeing them beat afl many weeks already

Hey… I’ve already said I want them to take it off DAZN … I’m just skeptical regardless of what they bid on another sport a few years back

They only owned 60 percent of Domain so reduce your amount accordingly

You’re an intelligent person so I’ll ask you this ….

They just appointed a former arl commissioner to handle the negotiations

You think that says they are serious they want the lot?

And if they do get the rights where does that leave Dazn

I don’t know that the new appointment necessarily means that they want it all….

It would be a massive gamble for them to pay $600m a year …an all or nothing on the NRL being the vehicle that’s going to drive Stan to some degree of profitability and increase their FTA back to No 1…. Could be a bold play that does all that , or a one way ticket to the unemployment queue for the people making that call…

However, if it does happen it would be interesting to see the pressure moving to the AFL deal … an exodus away from DAZN by the NRL fans , leaving the AFL the worry of getting paid over the remainder of their deal ..

Does having an ex ARL commissioner negotiating for 9 mean 9 will just empty their wallets into the NRL's bank account? Of course retaining the rights is important to 9 but they will also have a point where they will walk away if it goes beyond a certain price point. Although she might have legacy with the NRL, her paymasters are 9 so you would assume her focus is getting the best deal for 9.

While the NRL has more content to offer and ratings are up which should lead to a better deal than now, how much the NRL gets will come down to bidding tension and how much each bidder is willing to spend.

Nah didn't you know, executive level people always move jobs to enrich their former employer.

It seems unlikely that Nine/Stan will pay $3 billion. If they want all of the NRL, then they may have to sacrifice Origin to Seven.

What are 7 going to pay for that though ? $50m a year /$250m over the 5 years would be the ceiling you would think? Nine may as well pay for the whole thing , or hopefully 7 picks up the Monday night game as well where they are AFL free as well…

They offered 30 million last time but that was a joint bid with Foxsports

Foxsports may pay extra this time to stream origin together with a fta network

Is that enough for the NRL to be interested ? Obviously not right ?
Nope but it provides competition for nine

Fox could also partner with nine for origin

Stan bid 500 million for afl last time

If they offer nrl that (they can afford too) then Fox will have to go higher so they would be looking at a minimum of 550 million for Aus plus nz rights vs 400 million currently

Depends how keen stan / nine are

If they do get to 600 million it depends then how desperate Dazn is

A report I posted last week said a thirrd network had lodged interest in the nrl tv rights

I assumed it was seven for Origin

Seven needs to offer 75 to 100 million if they want origin on its own to make it worth it for the nrl as the other rights are devalued

The French football league and media group DAZN have settled their broadcast rights dispute, allowing the league to open talks with other broadcasters or potentially set up its own channel to screen matches. The settlement, confirmed by both parties on Friday, concludes several months of negotiations and a legal battle. DAZN last year agreed to pay about €400mn a year for the rights to show the majority of Ligue 1 matches from 2024 to 2029. But subscriber numbers have not met its expectations, losses were piling up and the broadcaster argued that the league was not doing enough to tackle piracy. The UK-based broadcaster had refused to continue on the previously agreed financial terms beyond this season, which is due to conclude this month. The league and DAZN faced off in court over the contract, with the threat of financial crisis hanging over smaller clubs if the funds were not paid. DAZN has released the French league operator from the exclusivity agreed under their contract, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. Ligue de Football Professionnel, which runs the top two leagues in France, will talk to other potential broadcast partners in the coming weeks, the people said. The league could find an alternative broadcaster or set up its own channel, an initiative that could ultimately be supported by DAZN. The company said earlier this week that it had proposed to invest €100mn in the league’s “channel project” over the first two years. If DAZN pulls out of the contract completely and does not invest in the new channel, then it would have to pay a break fee to the league of around €100mn.
