So instead of paying the NRL more …they are gunna try to pay the AFL less ..lol

They might find that harder to do than pulling out of the French soccer deal ..

Agree, who cares if it is counted as part of broadcast rights or not. It's money that would have come out of the AFL's pocket but instead someone else is paying for it.

It's like saying the NRL should not count the money they get from the autorities when calculating if Vegas is profitable or not or when clubs get paid to play games away from their home grounds.

It is used as a reason to bag out the NRL.

Say the NRL get $570m from TV next time - which I think is around the mark

That is a 30% lift from last deal and more than the Fox/ch7 AFL deal is

But if it is reported against the $642m a deal it is seen as a dud.

Eddie McGuire's quote. DAZN are lining up already to try and cut the AFL contract, I can give you that as an exclusive right now … They’re already going ‘Hang on, we’ve paid too much for this...

Unfortunately as neither code release pure tv deal only figures we will never know for sure, unless NRL achieves over $550mill cash avg then we can be reasonably confident its higher than AFL's cash tv component.

You would think that is a minimum.

PNG won't bring in much, NRL should flog off some Docos to Netflix and Amazon to drum up interest.

Setting up Bears and PNG gives you 2 years worth of docos, without using footage currently owned by Fox/ch9 and might interest general fans particularly. If shown at this time of the year where the larger sports are on break

If this actually happens it will be Christmas come early

They can always mortgage marvel stadium to cover for the giants suns and devils
That bad news for all sports broadcasting in Australia.

Means they wont have an appetite to pay a shitload for the NRL. And if we have no competition, just Channel 9 only, no chance of pushing the figure higher.

The next deal is probably the last before the NRL just goes it alone and makes the content themselves.

Dazn probably needs the money cause Stan are going to lodge a decent bid and they know which sport is their bread and butter

It was obvious Foxtel paid huge overs for the afl. Maybe they can go back to paramount to pick up the pieces if it does happen.

You think they might have picked up in the due diligence the rather large commitment to the AFL they were on the hook for the next 7 years ?

i assume the AFL are smart enough to have a pretty tight deal .. so whilst DAZN had some wriggle room to get out of the French deal. I would be shocked if that is the case here ..,

The deal was already done when they bought it

Now they’ve been owners for a while and see the competition from Stan they are probably panicking a bit.

Last year nrl provided around 80 of the top 100 most watched programs across the entire Foxtel network. Sure exclusive super Saturday for the afl that might have improved for them a little bit

But it’s an inferior product. Games competing against each other to maximise crowds a big part of it. Fta in the home market is a huge negative for pay tv

I’m sure the contract is watertight but next time they’ll be dealing with someone that isn’t keen for their product

that’s exactly what I said right? It’s a bit late to be dirty now about the deal already done with the AFL…

j really can’t see how they can afford to let the NRL go … they will be bleeding subscribers

what will they be left with … a sport they have apparently overpaid for the next 7 years?

Current afl fox deal 418 million pa

If we’re going off ratings then nrl beats afl by 30 percent more viewers on pay tv. That would assume an nrl tv deal is worth 520 million to Foxtel

That doesn’t include inflation since the afl did their deal or the two new teams/extra games / streaming of origin / Monday night football

There’s easily a case for nrl to be worth 550 to 600 million purely for the pay tv rights (assuming they don’t cut the number of games)

So even a worst case scanrio with the pay tv rights means the nrl will blow the afl deal out of the water

We don't have any proof they are "keen" for our game yet though either.
