I think people forget that if one network also own the streaming rights too (10 with Paramount, 9 with Stan) then they are no longer shedding viewers to another company in the simulcasting. They're still capturing the same audience. If one company wins, we're more likely to see more games on FTA throughout the season than fewer, because they'll use it to cross promote. So I'd expect things like Easter Monday to be on FTA if it were to happen.

The thing is they can also have a flexible FTA schedule. Say it's late in the season, and there's a 1 vs 2 match up on a Saturday night when no game normally airs, the network doesn't have to negotiate to switch from a 16 v 17 Sunday slot by coordinating with Foxtel. There could be a mechanism to pick their own slots each week depending on what rates best for them.

Nine continues to throw around money like sailors on shore leave after three months at sea … just did a deal with Netball to return that to FTA … add that to their recent deals for the unpopular Rugby Union and last year for the EPL, and the big money spends in recent years for events that last a couple of weeks like the Australian Open Tennis and Olympics.

never hear the “analysts “ warning about those sports though … just the NRL …the highest rating sport in the country that provides them quality content Feb through October .. . Make it make sense 🤔

I try and dismiss the articles downplaying the rights because obviously if Nine could get them cheaper they would. They don't care about growing the game, all they care about is what can the NRL do for them. What the NRL needs is a bidding war, and hopefully 10/Paramount come to the table and help drive that price up.

On another note, let's say the NRL isn't happy with any of the bids. Could they just not give them to anyone and start thier own streaming service? Or is that not allowed under the anti-siphoning laws?

They need to have games on fta due to anti siphoning

Would take a while to set up a streaming service but Pvl did buy the assets of a failed streamer for himself

Does free to air streaming fall in line with the legalities? I.e. if they ran two games a week free of charge through their own platform and six or seven charged?

If the NRL isn't happy, then one option they could do is sign a short term 2 year extension deal with the existing broadcasters with a slight increase in revenue.
