They undoubtedly both knew that it was a win-win position.

It could be said that they underestimated the scale of the News spilt milk reaction but that will be mostly forgotten after they sign the final contract.

Most of the News nonsense is just BS and idle threats. It has little impact in the real world. It's true that you should never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. But it's also true that News pays for the same amount of ink regardless of what story they run. Of course they'll have a rant when it doesn't cost them anything extra -- but when it starts to hurt the hip pocket (like losing or having to pay extra for a broadcast deal), you'll see them quietly change tact...

Three or four years after this final deal is signed, only a handful of people will remember the $1.4 billion valuation or the 6pm game or the silly threats etc. News might have won a few of the daily battles for the hearts and minds of stupid people but they risk losing the war.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but the news journalists have backed off a hell of alot IMO. They're still there, but the attacks, especially against Grant and Smith have dropped significantly.

I don't know if there's any specific reason for this, but it is in the middle of negotiations and the EPL have just shown that they are vulnerable. It could be that stars have aligned, might not be.

Three or four days more likely!

Wow... What.The.f**k.

That's such poorly executed "spin" I'm not sure it even qualifies as spin. It's just some idiot who reads like he struggles with comprehension of the quotes in his own articles.

He has just been promoted to Media Editor so it's obviously been worth it...:sarcasm:

The Australian names Darren Davidson as media editor replacing Sharri Markson

Spot on. News has to 'make nice' with the NRL administration, now Smith is gone.. because they're realising they have to - not just to save Super Saturday, but to save the rights altogether.

Thinking about it now, maybe the NRL & Smith had it planned all along for Smith to be a lightening rod for News's venting & a sacrifice for the greater good?

Just something about the way David Smith carried himself when he resigned.. I just wonder whether it was an planned outcome by the NRL and Smith...

it's starting to look orchestrated by the NRL & Nine.

Maybe with all of the speculation about Gyngell coming on board the NRL in some capacity he was part of setting up the sting. Nothing like a good conspiricay theory, but you can't help feel that Gyngell and NRL would get great pleasure in seeing NEWs getting screwed a little.

Gyng doesn't care for screwing news. Not his problem. I'm not even sure he's eligible to sit on the commission. He's also extremely loyal to Nine.

News are having their own internal movements at this time.

Lachlan Murdoch jets in to shake up Holt Street

News Corp Australia's (or Australasia's – whatever that really means) new chairman Michael Miller is settling into his spot on the executive floor of the Murdochs' Holt Street bunker.

Former group editorial director Campbell Reid was shipped off to corporate affairs last week, a gig we expect he'll be entirely effective at, for what it's worth (answer = less than nothing). But he's the first cab off a teeming rank.

Chairman Lachlan Murdoch lobs into Sydney this week to grill the troops. Budgets are being razed and editors are being shuffled. The Australian's veteran editor-in-chief Chris Mitchell is almost certainly leaving the building before Christmas, most likely replaced by the Daily Telegraph's batshit crazy editor (God love him) Paul Whittaker. Boris, as he's affectionately known, was offered a gig based in News Corp's New York HQ earlier this year, but (wisely?) demurred.

The Courier Mail's editor Chris Dore is expected to return to Sydney to run the Tele.

The division of labour between Miller and "chief executive" Peter Tonagh, as we predicted, is already as clear as mud. Stories from clients and executives already abound, as they're asked in for the same meeting twice, and one's office asking if they've already had it with the other.

Both are entirely capable fellows, but LKM was always going to be gun shy about having a "management consultant" running his dad's baby.

Im sure he would be....

As far as i can remember the last NRL role he held was a board position at the Roosters back in 2007ish. The only thing that automatically excludes nominees is having an NRL role within the last 3 years.

I can't remember if it was for the initial commissioners or the long term arrangement, but I thought that a commissioner couldn't have worked for an NRL club or state league or in the media for the preceding three years.

This is working out nicely for the NRL to have an extra game a week due to News being desperate to have more than 4 games a week exclusive and will be funding their 5th game while FTA keeps their 4

I'm strongly suspecting the NRL are awaiting the 'Whole Of Game Review' from Shane Richardson to be finalised, before making serious negotiations.

Grant intimated in his 2SM interview that this would come in the new year. So I am not expecting any swift moves on this yet.

Apparently, the media clause was only a suggestion and it was never put into the final constitution.

I would hope they would move to give better coverage to NSW/QLD Cup comps, even if it was given away for free to ABC, SBS or NITV.

It's finished and was being discussed at the next commission meeting.

I suspect it won't look anything like what Richo wanted

lol, I guess you've never been employed to write a report for someone who already has the answer they want? Naive or what.

the DT article was an interview not an opinion piece. Not surprisingly immediately after this interview we never heard from him again.

lets see which of these things Richo came into the job believing turns to reality in the report:

1. The code needs a clear vision for where the game should be in three, five and 10 years. Player burnout fits in that because obviously you’ve got to reduce the amount of games they play. It’s not about quantity, its quality.
2. We’ve got to expand. I’m not so concerned about the number of teams, it’s the number of fixtures. The bigger the expansion the better it is for the TV networks
3. I’m a fan of having all the Sydney clubs but they’ve got to be financial and stand on their own two feet. You can’t keep bailing out people.
4. My vision is to have a streamlined game that marries in both the northern and southern hemispheres
5. Sam Burgess didn’t leave us for the money. At the end of the day he left because he wanted the challenge of playing in a World Cup. Internationally, rugby league can get to that level.
6. I’m a great believer in the draft, especially with expansion.
