Intriguing the leak went to Fairfax. Something is definitely up, whether it is News being left with tails between their legs or what I don't know.

I am sure there will be a detail in this equally as striking as losing F&L was last time.

the AFL deal was scooped by fairfax as well, and was half a billion off...

Interestingly if True, maybe the strategy is :

Get FTA sorted

Get PAY sorted

Get Streaming sorted

Get Naming Rights Sorted

That means we still may have a $250M pay day to come from Telstra or someone

John Grant is on record saying they are looking for pay and streaming to be provided by the same broadcaster.

maybe non exclusive streaming - ie foxtel GO..

but there is still the whole other NRL.com season pass that can be sold for $90 + a year..

And worth $50+ mill a year to a telco...

There's only one reason the NRL would agree to this and that is Fox has stumped up big money to secure it......Gus' numbers may well be right which would be impressive.

First person to understand that the NRL has to okay the whole deal between 9 and Fox.

NRL'' So you want us to okay the Saturday game with our mates at 9.

FOX'' Yes pretty pls, mates rates if possible.

NRL'' Well champ that number right next to Pay TV Deal column needs some tweaking.

FOX'' What do you mean?

NRL'' Ask that silly question again and there is the door mate.

Lets wait and see how it goes.

Gibbsy has said all week on radio that the draw has been delayed because of another news corp offer.
Hope the deal kicks in next year if its done.

Not to be a downer since the money sounds like it might be amazing but if we're locked into three FTA games a week until ~2022 or so I'll be pretty disappointed.

Hope there's at least some hint of expansion at the announcement too.

If SMH is correct, Nine paying $625 Mil fior Thurs night, Fri night, Sunday Arvo + Origin..

A paltry increase from what they are paying now and they get an extra prime time game on Thurs night to be played in front of three men and a dog.

This has been some negotiation by Gyngell... Managed to wedge both News Ltd and the NRL on the same deal.

Well played.

Where in gods name did they pull that number from???

They said $35m a year for the saturday game (probably pulled right out of their ass), which would take 9s contribution down to $750.

Not to mention that the NRL would demand a good hunk of money for that little transaction between 9 and News; a game on 9 is not equal in value to a game on Fox!! they would obviously give consideration to the value of exposure than FTA would provide.

Edit: if they are also including the reduction in 9s deal for simulcasting, again, the NRL would be taking a chunk of cash out of that deal as well.

The ARLC-9 deal was structured to give lots of freedom to the ARLC while still securing the $billion they are getting now. They no doubt see this deal with Fox as their payday, they would never give away so much to 9 as the article suggests.

New NRL deal looms for Fox

NRL fans could get eight live TV games under a revamped proposal for Nine Network and Fox Sports.

The National Rugby League convened a marathon round of late talks last night as league commission chairman John Grant hurries to nail down a new TV rights deal.

There are suggestions a historic agreement could be signed as early as today between the NRL, Fox Sports, the Nine Network and Telstra, although sources close to the negotiations told The Australian this morning that no agreement has yet been reached.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Mr Grant asked the parties back to the negotiating table amid mounting frustration the code has not cut a pay TV deal with Fox, the News Corp-owned sports programming broadcaster.

It’s believed the sides are closer to a breakthrough on Fox’s purchase of the crucial Saturday night game from Nine for about $35 million a year, or $175 million across a contract set to run from 2018 to 2022.

Any move to surrender the Saturday night game to Fox will ensure the return of Super Saturday in line with the current deal.

There are also advanced discussions about a 6pm Friday game to be aired on Fox Sports, with talks proceeding through the night at League Central in Sydney.

NRL fans could get eight live television games under a revamped proposal for Nine Network and Fox Sports.

Fox Sports would show every game live — three of them simulcast with Nine — including the proposed new Friday night match, which would replace Monday night football.

If a deal is inked, the NRL will land a historic $1.85 billion, five-year rights agreement, although the contract would fall short of the Australian Football League’s recently signed $2.58 billion deal with News Corp.

For Nine, hefty annual payments will reduce its outlay from $925 million to around $650 million over the course of the five-year deal.

Fox set to win Saturday night NRL fight

THERE is growing speculation a historic $1.85 billion, five-year rights agreement between the National Rugby League, Fox Sports, the Nine Network and Telstra could be inked as early as Thursday.

Amid marathon talks late Wednesday night, insiders said Fox, Nine and the NRL were close to reaching agreement on the purchase of the Saturday night game by Fox from Nine for about $35 million a year, or $175 million over the full five year contract to run from 2018-2022. This figure was reached after haggling between the two parties.

The agreement on the Saturday game would ensure the return of Super Saturday to Fox, with three games to run that day culminating in the Saturday night game.

The Daily Telegraph also understands the parties were in advanced discussions on a Friday 6PM game to be screened on Fox Sports, with talks proceeding through the night.

Insiders say the sudden coming to a head of the talks occurred after the NRL brought News Corp, Telstra and Nine back to the negotiating table this week.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant told the Daily Telegraph late on Wednesday night he was “not in a position to either confirm or deny” that a deal was to be announced on Thursday or in coming days.

As revealed by the Telegraph just over a fortnight ago, Fox Sports could now screen as many as five live games in a deal currently under negotiation between News Corp, the NRL and the Nine Network, which could deliver the game $1.85 billion and be sealed as early as this week. Apart from the Friday and Saturday games, Fox could also now screen a Sunday 2PM game. The new deal has taken shape in the weeks since former League boss Dave Smith’s resignation last month.

Fox is also likely to simulcast all eight games of the round, although final details were still being hammered out overnight. The simulcast rights for Fox, plus its almost certain buyback of the Saturday night game, would reduce the cost to Nine of screening NRL over the five year contract from $925 million to around $650 million.

If Fox Sports gets everything that it wants, it could now be paying somewhere $900 million for the rights. Once other rights are taken into account, including digital and international rights, the NRL is expected to reap up to $1.85 billion.

News Ltd... Still spinning the Friday night 6pm game..

They say Fox are paying $900Mil including simulcasting...

Lets hope Gus has got his $1.175Bil figure from a reliable source.

I could live with Nine only paying $625-$650 Mil if this turns out to be the case.

Isn't that exactly what they told everyone a week or two ago with their 'proposal' announcement? Somehow I doubt it will work out so neatly, especially since they are still negotiating.
