Hard sell? It will be impossible.

You're getting ahead of yourself. It all depends on how many games there are. A full season? Yep that's going to be a nightmare. I agree with what you're saying about getting to games. Half a season? Well as others have said the Warriors will bear the burden but some teams will still cop it. With smart scheduling it might be that teams other than the Warriors only host the game once or twice over a five year period. Then again the press conference might announce it has been scrapped altogether.

But if it does happen and the net result is a total deal over $2 - $2.2 billion, I could cop it on the chin.

As always, I just say you should wait until you see the final details before writing any letters in blood to the NRL.

Maybe they will only get five Friday 6pm games at the end of the season, as a compromise for Nine retaining five sat night games, and the rest could be Sunday night.

Who really knows at this point? I'll believe their earnestness for the 6pm game when I see it in the final contract.

Wonder if we will end up with two Sat 7:30 live games ?

A interesting way to add a 9th game

Fox Sports pay TV deal takes NRL rights to more than $2 billion

A $1.9 billion broadcasting deal, together with sponsorship, taking the NRL's rights fees to more than $2 billion is expected to be revealed on Thursday afternoon.

All eight NRL games will be shown on Fox Sports each weekend, with the the pay TV broadcaster to simulcast the three matches broadcast on Channel Nine.

Telstra has retained digital rights via mobile phone and tablet, but Nine has streaming rights, which it bought as part of an announced $925 million deal in August.

Although the five-year deal was due to begin from the 2018 season, it may start a year earlier.

This would possibly free clubs of the unpopular Monday night game on Fox Sports.

The stand-off between the NRL and News Corp over pay TV rights for 2018 to 2022 was resolved when Fox Sports agreed to pay nearly $40 million a year for a prime-time Saturday night game acquired by Nine as part of the August free-to-air agreement.

Telstra is also expected to retain the naming rights for the NRL premiership, while the New Zealand broadcast rights could yield up to $150 million more.

News Corp chief executive Robert Thomson is understood to have flown in to Sydney to head up a marathon round of talks on Wednesday night with ARLC chairman John Grant and fellow commissioners Graeme Samuel and Jeremy Sutcliffe.

Nine and Telstra were also represented.

A meeting of the ARL Commission has been convened to discuss details of the deal, which will see the status quo remain, three free-to-air games on Nine and five matches shown of Fox Sports, until the end of the 2022 season.

A leading media rights consultant declared it "a great deal for the NRL and Fox Sports".

It is also a great deal for Nine if it pays only $625 million for Thursday, Friday nights and Sunday afternoon matches, as well as the priceless State of Origin series and streaming rights.

Fox Sports also gained an assurance that NRL control of programming would not mean a devaluing of the games it has acquired.

The NRL is expected to call a press conference to trumpet the record deal on Thursday afternoon.

Does that mean Nine has streaming rights for Foxtel games as well?

That's how it reads, I guess all the matches will be live on a service like Stan and Fox will be limited to just their standard Foxtel services (TV, Go etc?) where they can't charge extra. It doesn't sound like a good deal for Fox if that plays out as it reads by Roy.

I'm reading it as referring to the four Nine games, though HD online streaming service would be great.

yep, although now probably three games.

but those streaming rights were non-exclusive, the subscriber rights could still be sold. I think Roy is playing catchup and is probably light on details.

I always wait until I see the final deal as I do understand it may not occur. I was just pointing out how dumb an idea it is and why, regardless of whether it is for part of a season or for a full season. It would become as popular with people attending games as Monday night football currently is, and I somehow doubt the clubs would be happy with that.

Also I don't write letters in blood. I get too light headed if I do. So, I use tomato sauce instead. :D

Fox Sports close in on new broadcast deal to give fans best ever TV experience

FOX SPORTS
November 26, 2015 1:39PM

FOX Sports is expected to broadcast every game of the 2016 NRL season live, in high definition and ad free whistle-to-whistle right up to the grand final.

And the news is set to get even better for rugby league fans in 2017 with Fox Sports primed to launch a dedicated 24-hour NRL channel.

Foxsports.com.au understands a new broadcast deal between News Corp Australia and the NRL is nearing completion that would see more rugby league broadcast than ever before on Australia’s sports leader.

FOX Sports is expected to broadcast three games on Super Saturday, a Sunday afternoon game and Monday Night Football - all live, exclusive, in high definition and ad free whistle-to-whistle throughout the 2016 season.

FOX Sports would also simulcast Thursday Night Football, Friday Night Football and Sunday games with Channel Nine.

The new broadcast deal is anticipated to evolve in 2017 with FOX Sports to launch its first ever 24-hour dedicated rugby league channel.

FOX Sports would broadcast a 6pm Friday night game, retain its Super Saturday franchise and cover a Sunday afternoon game live, exclusive, in high definition and ad free whistle-to-whistle.

It would also simulcast Thursday Night Football, a second Friday game and a Sunday game with Channel Nine.

Foxsports.com.au understands the deal could be announced as early as this afternoon.

If that Friday 6pm game is true, there better be a damn good reason for it- I.e. there's a second NZ team being brought in to make the slot viable.
