I interpreted double header to mean the same setup we get now on Friday nights, I re-read it and does say Live so you are probably right.

Freudenstein claimed on The Business the other night that AFL rates on average higher than NRL, which is complete nonsense, so I'm not sure the parties are even talking again yet.

I would be disappointed if Nine give up the Sat game FTA...

The AFL has always been shown on FTA on Sat nights and that seems to work OK for Fox...

Smith needs to hold firm...

It would ,make sense for fox to start simulcasting in 2016 if they do a new deal. Anything is possible I guess long way from 2018. Wonder if Dave Smith will stick around?

ARL chairman John Grant's fallout with Dave Smith has NRL clubs jittery

Oh no! On the eve of the NRL finals series come disturbing reports that ARL Commission chairman John Grant is losing faith in chief executive Dave Smith.

They believe Grant – a passionate Queenslander who wears his maroon scarf with pride at Origin matches – is more than prepared to let some Sydney clubs wither on the vine. The clubs believe he considers them a "source of annoyance". Ugly stuff.
The talk about the chairman not being happy with his chief executive has been buzzing about for months, as drama after drama in Club Land is played out in the daily press.
Grant went so far as to contact NRL bosses personally about signing competition agreements, which sent the message to others that he isn't convinced Smith is getting the job done.
This column was given an indication of the unrest a fortnight ago when Smith pulled out of a one-on-one interview at the 11th hour, with no explanation.
The interview was supposed to be a chance for Smith to clear the air on issues such as the confusing broadcast deal with Channel Nine, the future of embattled clubs like the NRL-controlled Wests Tigers, and speculation he will collect a fat bonus in the next year before exiting through the backdoor.

An apologetic Smith won't tell me why he aborted the interview so abruptly, but the strong suspicion is the ARL Commission – which met that day – had gagged him. He'd already said too much after the Nine deal was struck.
Smith and Grant were contacted for comment through the NRL media department, which never got back to us.

Everything keeps pointing back to the press conference to announce the new FTA deal, where was Gyngell and in particular where was Grant, it was strange at the time and it's strange now.

He couldn't have gone rogue, as chairman of the ARLC Grant would have had to sign off on the deal, so there must have been other reasons and I don't subscribe to the theory it was deliberately low key out of respect to News Corp, they could have waited and announced it a week later when Murdoch was out of the country, there must be an explanation for both the timing and presentation of the announcement. The ACCC verdict is probably the only thing that makes any sense, but even that wasn't due until this week & now customarily delayed.

I'm very keen to see the method to the madness, a lot of people's reputation is on the line over the outcome.

From the SHM article on the last page. Does this mean a possibility of 8 games but potentially a WA timeslot which might work for FOX on Sunday night

I had dinner with him one night. His distaste for sydney beach side clubs was obvious.

Go on then, what did he say?
It was over two years ago. Cant remember exactly what he said but it was not complimentary. Seemed quite a nice bloke actually. Bloody smart thats for sure.

So he flew around to all the affiliate states, promised the world and delivered nothing (as you know in tassie) then bagged clubs over a boozy dinner. And this guy is the chairman. Piss weak leader.

Anyway we're getting off topic.

$1.9b is my guess for the tv deal, based on absolutely nothing.
