Grant flat out lied to us in WA, he has zero credibility. I went to a breakfast event with him when arlc took over the game. He told us no nrl expansion for a while but that Perth would get a guaranteed 3 games a year plus an international plus significant more funding for the warl. All of which was BS.

If I was Sitting near you at brekky listening to the constant bitching, moaning & incessant drivel, I'd also tell you whatever you wanted to hear .

ACCC queries Foxtel/Ten deals
[Mon 14/09/2015 12:44 PM]

By Don Groves

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has expressed concern about the proposed acquisitions between Foxtel Management and Ten Network Holdings Ltd. and is seeking further information.

Foxtel proposes to acquire up to 15% of Ten, which plans to take a 24.99% stake in subscription channels ad sales rep MCN. Ten will also have an option to acquire 10% of Presto TV, the joint venture between Foxtel and Seven West Media.

"The ACCC is concerned that the proposed acquisitions have the potential to substantially lessen competition for the supply of free-to-air television services in Australia, particularly in the broadcasting of sports content,” ACCC chairman Rod Sims said.

“The proposed acquisitions may increase the likelihood of Ten and Foxtel entering into joint bids and other commercial arrangements for acquisition of sports rights, to the exclusion of other free-to-air networks. Such arrangements could enhance Ten’s ability to acquire the rights to sports, including premium sports, and could increase the likelihood of more sport being shown exclusively on Foxtel.”

“Given the importance of sporting content to a broadcaster’s ability to compete strongly with other free-to-air networks, the ACCC is concerned that the advantage Ten would gain in acquiring sporting content may lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the free-to-air television market, or in the broader market for the supply of television viewing services.

From page 158.....

This what the doc said...News ltd was waiting for accc approval for a ten/fox bid, which would have hidden the free to air deal (lets say one billion the lot) or put another way, it wouldn't have been the biggest/most/money fta which NINE just paid.

buy the way voice your disapproval at the accc in regards to the ten/foxtel merger..

Looks like the accc are taking this seriously, as they should. Fox reluctance to finalize a pay TV NRL deal is proof that with a ten /foxtel tie-up overriding market power for sports rights will be showcased on PAY tv while free to air pick uo the crumbs

http://www.afr.com/business/media-and-marketing/nines-david-gyngell-faces-own-reality-tv-should-he-go-or-should-he-stay-20150911-gjkcx3

This AFR article seems innocuous but there's an important reminder in it:

From October 1, Gyngell's contract requires that he give one year's notice should he wish to depart.

A lot of people have been saying for a long time that Gyngell wants to move onto other things.

If he wants out this year he has to make the announcement before the end of this month. If October rolls over he's committing to at least one more year -- and despite what you might read the only person who really knows what his choice will be is that of Gyngell himself.

Some people are saying there could be announcement soon but one that sets up a transition period for his successor. The key thing is -- he's not the kind of man to leave things hanging. There's no point arranging that NRL deal only to have it unmade under someone else's watch.

Even though pen has been put to paper 1 of the NRL matches, the streaming rights etc are still matters of contention. This draws Gyngell back in even more.

Telstra are putting the pressure on. I suspect Gyngell is/will be next. Many suspect it was even be a key motivating factor for Gyngell as to the timing of why the deal was done when it was done.

If October 1st ticks over and Gyngell is sticking around, less pressure on Fox.
If an announcement is made, Gyngell will want the NRL matter resolved before he's out the door. Stay tuned.

The ACCC also expects an NRL deal with foxsports and for the foreseeable future doesn't think SVOD providers are a realistic threat to fox for sports rights.

Nine has recently entered into an agreement with the National Rugby League (NRL) for the broadcast of four live games per week from 2018 to 2022 without entering into an agreement with Foxtel. No agreement has been reached for the broadcast of the remaining games but given the lack of alternative STV broadcasters currently offering sports content, it is likely that they will ultimately be broadcast on Foxtel, which may also simulcast the matches shown on Nine.

Since the NRL has not yet assigned all of the rights to its content, there may be the potential, subject to the contractual arrangements with Nine, for Foxtel and Ten to acquire some or all of these remaining rights.

There's a lot of ways this could all end up and the NRL have arranged so there's a lot of flexibility with moving things around.

For example to resolve any Saturday Night issues, 9 can onsell direct to 10 or 9 can onsell to Fox if it's agreed that 10 also get a game in different slot. Or 9 drop Saturdays for Sunday doubleheaders. You'd think if Fox gets the rights and the 10 merger is approved 10 will get a slice of the NRL pie.

The thing with 10 is their news slots work well with fitting in more NRL - for example games @ 2, 4, 6, 8 etc on Saturdays with the 6pm match simulcast post-news so Foxtel still get the premium 8pm Saturday night slot. Or games @ 1, 3, 5, 7 on Sundays with the 3 pm match simulcast pre-news so Foxtel gets premium Sunday twilight & evening slots. Or 9 gets Sunday double headers & Foxtel keep Saturdays exclusive. It will be a case of wait and see really. Essentially there's multiple ways that Foxtel can get Saturday & Sunday night prime time NRL.

Re: ACCC, people will know the ACCC's outcome well before it is officially announced though, it's just how it goes.

The NRL really nèed to do something about their free to air coverage in New Zealand.

https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/spo...ve-aussie-rules-to-new-zealand-screens-q09744

The AFL have taken a leap here to screen games live on Freeview, via a pop-up channel run by TVNZ.

They tried this before with independent Free-to-air channel Sommet Sports, but that wily little startup fell-over financially in record time, leaving the AFL without a live broadcaster here (Sky Sports showed highlights, and the odd full game on delay, but only the Grand final and the Wellington-hosted game live)

Hooking up with the State broadcaster TVNZ is another go at getting exposure in NZ - and a win-win. TVNZ also win by getting more content to build a sports channel (they also have some golf, tennis & NFL on that channel.) - and TVNZ aren't gonna go broke like Sommet did.

In a country with no anti-syphoning laws, and NRL games on a 24 hour delay for those without the luxury of Sky Sports - this is a shrewd move by AFL.

Even with rugby union, our national sport.. free to air gets selected Super Rugby games & tests on delay - not live- delay.

I'm not saying this will make AFL a major sport here tomorrow, but gees they're keen to spread the gospel.

Sky sport probably didn't want AFL, the fact their previous broadcast partner went belly up speaks volumes for their popularity. I doubt TVNZ would be paying for it.

Exactly my point. The AFL dont mind selling the rights for little, or even giving them away to increase their profile. Classic loss-leader behavour, sure.. but they're playing the long game.
