Afl trying to crack the nz market= lol

Before we shrug this off, or just laugh at them.. bare in mind this quote.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Mahatma Gandhi

At what point do we stop laughing at AFL and actually fight them?

Exactly my point. The AFL dont mind selling the rights for little, or even giving them away to increase their profile. Classic loss-leader behavour, sure.. but they're playing the long game.

it's not a loss if they aren't giving anything up, the NRL actually have a product that Sky pay $20m for each year, the AFL have a product no one watches or cares about and is worth nothing to NZ broadcasters, beggars can't be choosers, the AFL aren't being bold.

The ARU had to pay the ABC to broadcast the ARC within Australia, if anyone thinks that the AFL isn't losing a lot of money on this they're kidding themselves.

Don't forget that the AFL also just lost their sweetheart coverage on the Australia Channel, which used to cover 48 countries. Things are hardly looking up for them outside of Aus, despite their best efforts.

I take his point though, the NRL should be looking to get some live FTA coverage in the next NZ deal and TVNZ has said today they are keen to bid, potentially in concert with Sky.

Latch hinted TVNZ would now seek rights for more coveted sporting events, saying they were "interested in engaging" more with Sky TV to claim free-to-air rights for major sports and see if they could deliver combined free-to-air/pay TV deals for major rights.

While the rights for league (2018), rugby (2021) and cricket (2020) aren't due on the market for some time, Latch hinted that the broadcaster "could be" very interested in getting into negotiations for them when they do come up.

Hehe.. perhaps not, but I stand by the quote.

Comparatively, NRL is in a position of strength in NZ compred to AFL.. sure.

But do we want to give them a leg-up by allowing them to be the only decent FTA game on NZ?

Better to fight them now, than give them any chance unopposed, however small.

Just because a famous person said it, doesnt mean it is true...

There is not much the NRL can do to stop another sport, just promote their own.

Anyone know what premier sports in UK pay for nrl? I'm guessing the other international TV deals aren't worth much?

It seems a pretty logical sequence of events to me. I'm sure there's been plenty of instances in the past where someone's been laughed at, but still risen to a worrying position of power

On the second count - that's exactly my point. The balance in coverage here for the NRL has been FAR too tilted towards pay tv.. FTA needs a decent go.

The question is how much pay-tv money from Sky is the NRL willing to sacrifice to widen it's coverage to those who don't have Sky?

Which is the mentality they have always had.

I have no doubt that the NRL will be aiming to secure better F2A coverage in NZ.

If hope so for them. Growing up pre-Warriors you have 3 FTA games, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights (Aussie League on 2 with the two Graham's). KO wasn't until 10pm but back then you didn't care. You'd want the Sunday ch9 game live into NZ at 6pm and that'd be a winner.

With the new HD laws passed this month Gibbsy on 2UE said Nine will broadcast NRL in 2016 on HD channel. So that's good news. Wonder if his rumour about Fox and Nine doing a deal for 2016 onwards is true?

Doubt it re NZ, unfortunately the NRL will now be judged against the AFL deal so they will be under pressure to squeeze every $ out of every deal regardless of best interests for the game or fans. If they deliver less than the AFL the papers are going to crucify Smith and the clubs will follow suit and stick the knife in.

TBF, they could have taken a $1.5ish-billion deal last time, but decided dropping the F&L rights was more important...

I understand youre trying to build a narrative of "their only in it for the short term personal glory", but the facts are against you here.

Note: it is funny that people preface the deal with statements like this, meaning the MORE money the ARLC extract from the deal, the worse the deal is meant to look.

So pretty much it'll be exactly as it is now. Except all of a sudden, the ARLC and Smith will suddenly care what the papers are saying.
